Types of Informational Texts
Informational texts are nonfiction writings that give readers facts, details, and explanations about real-life topics. They are different from stories or poems because their main purpose is to inform, explain, or describe something. Understanding the types of informational text helps us choose the right reading strategies.
Main Types of Informational Text 1. Descriptive Text Purpose: To describe a person, place, object, or idea using details that help the reader imagine it. Clues/Features: Lots of adjectives, sensory words, and specific details. Example: An article describing the Mayon Volcano’s perfect cone shape and natural beauty.
Mayon Volcano, known as the “Perfect Cone,” rises majestically in Albay with its near-symmetrical shape. Its green slopes are covered with forests and farmlands, making it breathtaking to look at from a distance. When the sun sets, the volcano glows beautifully against the sky, adding to its enchanting view. Despite its beauty, Mayon is also feared for its destructive eruptions that have shaped the lives of the people around it. Truly, it is both a natural wonder and a reminder of nature’s power.
Main Types of Informational Text 2. Sequence / Chronological Text Purpose: To explain events in the order they happened or steps in a process. Clues/Features: Uses words like first, next, then, finally, before, after . Example: A recipe explaining how to cook sinigang step by step.
To cook sinigang, start by boiling pork, beef, or shrimp in water until tender. Next, add onions, tomatoes, and radish to the pot to enhance the flavor of the broth. Put in vegetables like kangkong, sitaw , or eggplant and let them soften. Then, pour the sinigang mix or fresh tamarind juice to give the dish its sour taste. Finally, season with fish sauce or salt, simmer for a few minutes, and serve hot with rice.
Main Types of Informational Text 3. Cause and Effect Text Purpose: To explain reasons why something happened and the results of it. Clues/Features: Uses words like because, therefore, as a result, since, due to . Example: A report showing how deforestation leads to flooding.
Deforestation happens when too many trees are cut down, and this causes serious problems in the environment. Since trees absorb water, removing them means there is nothing to stop heavy rain from flowing directly into rivers. As a result, the water level rises quickly, which leads to flooding in nearby communities. Flooding becomes worse because the soil, without trees, easily erodes and blocks waterways. Therefore, protecting forests is very important to prevent natural disasters.
Main Types of Informational Text 4. Problem and Solution Text Purpose: To present a problem and suggest one or more solutions. Clues/Features: Words like problem, issue, solution, answer, solve, so that . Example: A passage about the problem of plastic waste and solutions like recycling.
Plastic waste is a serious problem that affects the environment and human health. One issue is that plastics take hundreds of years to decompose, polluting land and oceans. A possible solution is to practice recycling so that plastics can be reused instead of being thrown away. Communities can also reduce the problem by using eco-friendly bags and containers. By working together, we can solve the issue of plastic waste and protect our planet.
Main Types of Informational Text 5. Compare and Contrast Text Purpose: To show similarities and differences between two or more things. Clues/Features: Uses words like both, similar to, however, unlike, on the other hand . Example: A text comparing traditional games like patintero to modern video games.
Traditional games like patintero are fun and require physical activity, while modern video games are played using gadgets. Both types of games bring enjoyment to children and help them build friendships. However, traditional games are usually played outdoors, unlike video games that are often enjoyed indoors. On the other hand, video games can be played anytime, even without many players, which is different from traditional games. Similar to each other, they both serve as a source of entertainment for the youth.
Main Types of Informational Text 6. Persuasive / Opinion-Based Informational Text (sometimes included as a sub-type in informational texts) Purpose: To convince the reader about a viewpoint using facts and logical arguments. Clues/Features: Uses evidence, reasons, and persuasive words like must, should, best, important . Example: An article explaining why schools should plant more trees.
Schools should plant more trees because they provide shade and fresh air for students. It is important to have a clean and green environment so that children can study comfortably. Trees also help reduce pollution, which is a big reason why they must be protected and cared for. The best way to teach students about nature is to let them experience it through school gardens and tree-planting activities. Therefore, every school should take part in planting trees to make the community healthier and greener.
