Characteristics of Tacit Knowledge Personal and Intuitive : Tacit knowledge is highly personal, rooted in individual experiences , skills, and intuition. It involves knowing "how" rather than "what." Difficult to Articulate : It is hard to put into words or formally explain , as it often involves subconscious skills, feelings, and insights developed over time. Gained Through Experience : Tacit knowledge is acquired through hands-on experience, practice, and learning by doing , rather than from formal education. Context-Specific : It is deeply tied to specific contexts or situations , making it difficult to transfer to different environments without direct experience in those settings.
Contd., Hard to Transfer : Unlike explicit knowledge, tacit knowledge is challenging to transfer to others . It typically requires observation, personal interaction, or shared experience to be passed on. Dynamic and Evolving : Tacit knowledge evolves as an individual gains more experience and interacts with their environment, making it adaptable to changing circumstances. Rooted in Actions : It is deeply embedded in physical actions, behaviors , and practice , such as the way a craftsman works with tools or a musician plays an instrument. Implicit : Often operates at a subconscious level , meaning that individuals may not even be fully aware of the knowledge they possess or use.
