Types of Movable bridges By….. G.SHIVAKRISHNA

What is a bridge? What is movable bridge? Types of movable bridges? Advantages? Disadvantages? Contents

A  bridge  is a  structure  built to  span  physical obstacles such as a  body of water ,  valley , or  road , for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. What Is a Bridge?

A  moveable bridge , or  movable bridge i s a  bridge  that moves to allow passage (usually) for boats or barges. What is Moveable bridge?

A  drawbridge or draw-bridge  is a type of  movable bridge  typically associated with the entrance of a  castle  surrounded by a  moat Draw Bridge

A  bascule bridge  (commonly referred to as a  drawbridge ) is a  moveable bridge  with a counterweight that continuously balances a s pan , or "leaf," throughout its upward swing to provide clearance for boat traffic Bascule Bridge

It is a three-segment  bascule bridge  that folds in the shape of the letter  N . Folding bridge

The bridge consists of eight triangular sections hinged at the walkway level and connected above by two-part links that can be collapsed towards the deck by  hydraulic cylinders , which are concealed in vertical posts in the bridge parapets. Curling bridge

A  vertical-lift bridge  or  lift bridge  is a type of  movable bridge  in which a  span  rises vertically while remaining parallel with the deck. Vertical lifting bridges

A  table bridge  is a  moveable bridge  in which the deck moves along the vertical axis.  Hydraulic pillars  under the bridge raise the bridge deck to allow barge traffic to pass beneath it Table Bridges

A  retractable bridge  is a type of  movable bridge  in which the deck can be rolled or slid backwards to open a gap while crossing traffic, usually a ship on a waterway. This type is sometimes referred to as a  thrust bridge . Retractable bridge

A  submersible bridge  is a type of  movable bridge  that lowers the bridge deck below the water level to permit waterborne traffic to use the waterway. submersible bridge

A  tilt bridge  is a type of  moveable bridge  which rotates about fixed endpoints rather than lifting or bending, as with a  drawbridge Tilt bridge

A  swing bridge  is a  movable bridge  that has as its primary structural support a vertical locating pin and support ring, usually at or near to its center of gravity, swing bridge

A  transporter bridge  (also  ferry bridge  or  aerial transfer bridge ) is a type of  movable bridge  that carries a segment of roadway across a river. The  gondola  is slung from a tall span by  wires  or a metal frame Transporter bridge

A  jet bridge  extends from an  airport terminal   gate  to an  airplane , allowing passengers to board and disembark without going outside. [ Jet bridge

Advantages An advantage of making bridges moveable Is the lower cost, due to the absence of high piers and long approaches Disadvantages  The principal disadvantage is that the traffic on the bridge must be halted when it is opened for passages.
