About This Presentation

Types of Pollution air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, noise pollution

Slide Content

water What Is Pollution? Pollution happens when harmful materials are introduced into the environment. These harmful materials can include chemicals, gases and waste. There are five main types of pollution. air land light noise

Water Pollution Water pollution happens when harmful chemicals and materials enter water sources. This can include rubbish thrown into rivers and oceans and also chemical waste from factories. Some chemicals, like pesticides, used by farmers can soak into the ground and pollute the surface water. This can then drain into rivers and lakes. Waste plastic often makes its way into water and causes many problems for wildlife. Water pollution puts aquatic species and their habitats in danger.

Land Pollution Land pollution is caused when the land is contaminated by waste or chemicals. This can happen when litter is discarded. Landfill sites are areas of land where rubbish is dumped. These are large holes in the ground with the specific purpose of containing household waste. Waste is compacted, processed and buried in the landfill sites. Some of this breaks down but some materials do not decompose. Plastic will remain in the ground for many decades.

Land Pollution Land pollution can also occur when chemicals from factories or pesticides from farms contaminate the soil. Some types of mining cause land pollution. Land pollution can affect wildlife by damaging or destroying habitats. When chemicals enter the soil used to grow crops, it can cause health problems for humans.

Air Pollution Most air pollution is caused by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil. Some factories, power plants, cars and aeroplanes all use fossil fuels. When these materials are burnt, they release harmful gases into the air which are thought to cause global warming. Fossil fuels are burnt in the production of plastic. Over 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year. This has a negative impact on air quality.

Air Pollution Air pollution is often worse in cities where there are lots of factories and cars. The pollutants build up in the air and become trapped by tall buildings. This can be seen as ‘smog’, a combination of smoke and fog, which makes the air thick and hazy. Poor air quality can cause health problems. Not all air pollution is caused as a result of human activity.  Natural occurrences such as volcanic eruptions and tsunamis also cause air pollution.

Air Pollution – The Causes Now that we know what air pollution is, let’s study what causes it. Some sources of air pollution in the cities include: dust, dirt and smoke produced by construction industries and factories. Transportation, generators, indoor cooking, waste burning, etc..

Indoor Air pollution Pollution can also be happening within a household. The main sources are: Perfumes Tobacco products Wall Paints Products for household maintenance (such as sprays, laundry detergents, bleach, etc..) Pesticides Fuel-burning combustion appliances (Such as Compressed Natural Gas – CNG)

(CNN) More than  30,000  deaths in the United States in a single year may have been caused by air pollution. Not only does air pollution kill, but it also comes with numerous health diseases. It damages our lungs , affects our heart’s health, causes migraines, and much more. There are many ways we can avoid or prevent this from happening. How To Avoid It?

Option 1: Going green is a lifestyle change targeted at being consciously aware of the surrounding environment and how things we do affect the environment. It includes: saving money, using solar energy, reducing pollution, conserving energy, planting more trees and plants. We could “go green.” We could even add some more plants in our homes. Not only would it look pretty, but it would also cleanse and purify the air.

Option 2: We should use our vehicles less often and walk more (this is good for our health since we are exercising more). We should also carpool and rideshare whenever we get the opportunity. C onsider using  public transportation . Therefore , as a better option, we could run, jog, walk, or bicycle our way to the desired destination.

Option 3: If we are using materials that have a lot of chemicals and smell strongly, we should consider using them outside (for instance, industries are built far away from cities since they are dealing with hazardous chemicals, and they are bad for our health) or not using them at all. We could replace some hazardous chemicals as well with safer and environment friendly options.

Ideas These were the main three ways that I think could save our environment, but there are also many other ways. The following are a few: Turning off the light when not in use Planting a garden Making use of solar energy

Ideas Reusing plastic bags Applying the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) Using both sides of paper Eating organic food

Conclusion We should take some time to think about this topic. This includes thinking about how to make a healthy and safe environment instead of damaging it. Most countries around the world face a similar problem of air pollution. If we work together as one whole, we can make the world a better place for everyone. The choices we make impact both our environment and the future.

Big and Small Small Pollutants in Water Big Pollutants in Water Small pollutants in water mean tiny, microscopic toxins that we can’t see. They build up and pollute our water. Big pollutants in water are types of waste that you can see, such as plastic bags, leaves, dead animals, dog waste and wrappers.

Sources of Water Pollution Often, the sources of water pollution are: leaking pipes; dog droppings washed from the roads, footpaths and gardens; litter, such as wrappers and plastic bags; accidents from industry; dumping of chemicals; shipping; farming activities, such as fertiliser used on the land that has washed away; oil dripping from cars.

What Damage Can Pollution Cause? chemicals fertilisers litter can cause a lack of oxygen, killing animals can be ingested by animals or trap them can poison animals Photo courtesy of IAEA Imagebank, jeremyg3030 and eutrophication&hypoxia (@flickr.com) - granted under creative commons licence - attribution

The King River The King River in Tasmania is thought to be the most polluted river in Australia. Photo courtesy of Riverhugger - granted under creative commons licence - attribution For about 70 years, it was used to dump the mining waste from a nearby copper mine.

Murray-Darling Basin Pollution The major water source for food production in Australia is the Murray-Darling Basin. Its river system has been made unhealthy by overuse of the water and pollution flowing into it from different sources. The challenge for Australia is to make sure the water in the basin is managed sustainably, and there is enough left over for the environment.

What Can We Do to Reduce Pollution? Be careful about what you throw down your sink or toilet. Don’t throw paints, oils or other forms of litter down the drain. Use environmentally friendly household products, such as cleaning products and toiletries. Take great care not to overuse pesticides and fertilisers. This will prevent runoffs of the material into nearby water sources. By having more plants in your garden, you are preventing fertiliser, pesticides and contaminated water from running off into nearby water sources. Don’t throw litter into rivers, lakes or oceans.

What Governments do to Reduce Pollution? Form Marine Protection Areas and Marine Conservation Areas Legislate to ensure businesses dispose of waste responsibly View a map from the Department of the Environment of where these are. Australia is a marine nation. It is surrounded by magnificent oceans. These oceans are one of the most important and beautiful natural resources. They are part of the Australian way of life. Over 3.1 million square kilometres of Commonwealth waters are marine reserves. It is the world’s largest network of marine reserves. If a person is convicted of polluting a waterway, they could be made to pay large fines and/or be sentenced to do time in prison. How do you think that governments should deal with the problem?

How Can You Help? There are lots of simple things everyone can do to help reduce pollution. Recycle as much as possible, avoiding single-use plastics. Be responsible with music and TV sound levels. Compost waste for the garden. Organise litter picks in the local area. Try to car share or use public transport. Turn lights off when they are not needed.
