2. After smallpox eradication in 1977 by intensive and strategic vaccination, India launched its Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) in 1978 with BCG, DPT, TAB and OPV to prevent 6 common communicable diseases, viz. tuberculosis, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, typhoid and polio.
