History of Ujjain  By the 6th century B.C. Avanti with its capital at Ujjaini , is mentioned in Buddhist literature as one of the four great powers along with Vatsa , Kosala and Magadha. Ujjain is considered to be the traditional capital of King   Vikramaditya , at whose court the nine poets known as the navaratna  (nine jewels) of Sanskrit literature are said to have flourished.  Under the  Mughal  emperor Akbar it became the capital of  Malwa . After Indian independence, ujjain become part of madhya bharat state which later merged into the Madhya Pradesh state.

Religious Significance Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling is one of twelve jyotirlings in India. The main significance of this jyotirling is that , it is believed to be born of itself from the deriving power within itself while other jyotirlings have been established using mantra shakti .   Mahakaleshwar is known to be dakshinamurti , facing the south. This is a unique feature upheld by tantric traditions to be found only in Mahakaleshwar among the twelve Jyotirlingas .

WHY IS IT DIFFERENT? Ujjain represents an interesting blend of an age-old legacy and the modern-day lifestyle. Main focus has been on, not losing the cultural heritage of this ancient city along with rapid changes and developments. A serene place with no industry, which makes it a pollution free city A city having a myth that no king cannot spend a night in the city and has to spend beyond the range of the place . Tropic of cancer passes above the city making it more religiously significant

Conclusion Ujjain being a small city yet it has a very rich culture which makes it a very significant and a historical city. A place with calm in its veins and greenery to cover with. Indeed a place to visit once in a lifetime.
