Understanding assumption in research DONNAVE N. TORALDE Presenter

What is assumptions? Statements taken for granted as true without proof.  Can be based on prior knowledge or experience Not scientifically tested

Assumptions are typically found in the latter third of a research proposal or Chapter 1 They often come after the scope section, but placement can vary Assumptions offer the researcher's perspective on what is most pertinent to the study Introduction to assumptions in research

IMPORTANCE OF ASSUMPTIONS IN RESEARCH 1. Guiding Research Design and Methodology 3. Influencing Data Interpretation and Conclusion 2. Shaping Research Questions and Hypothesis 4. Enhancing Transparency and Reproducibility 5. Identifying Potential Limitations and Risks 6. Fostering Critical Thinking

TYPES OF ASSUMPTION Universal Assumption Research/Methodological Assumption Theoretical Assumptions Warranted Assumption Unwarranted Assumption Ontological Assumption Epistomological Assumption Axiological Assumption

TYPES OF ASSUMPTION UNIVERSAL ASSUMPTIONS These are beliefs that assumed to be true by a large part of society or universe. Testing of such assumption is not always possible

TYPES OF ASSUMPTION 2. RESEARCH/METHODOLOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS Researcher has to formulate some of the methodological assumptions to conduct a research study.

TYPES OF ASSUMPTION 3. THEORITICAL ASSUMPTIONS These are beliefs about how concepts interact and influence each other.

TYPES OF ASSUMPTION 4. WARRANTED ASSUMPTIONS These are assumptions that are supported by existing evidence or logical reasoning

TYPES OF ASSUMPTION 5. UNWARRANTED ASSUMPTIONS These assumptions do not have supportive evidence or proof. Sometimes, it will be difficult to fulfill these kind of assumptions.

TYPES OF ASSUMPTION 6. ONTOLOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS These deal with the nature of reality and what can be known.

TYPES OF ASSUMPTION 7. EPISTEMOLOGICAL ASSUMPTIONS These concern the nature of knowledge and how it can be acquired

Researchers must assume things that may not always be true Assumptions are often based on the researcher's beliefs Many factors are out of the researcher's control Acknowledging assumptions helps identify potential limitations How might incorrect assumptions affect research outcomes? The Reality of Research Assumptions
