INTRODUCTION

MICROBIOLOGY Micro – Small Bio – Living Logy – Study “Microbiology is a specialized branch of biology that deals with the study of organisms which are usually invisible to naked eye.”

HISTORY OF MICROBIOLOGY 1. Aristotle : - Father of biology - Living Organisms - Non Living organisms - Many living organisms , we can’t see. 2. Roger Bacon: - Roger Bacon invented the magnifying glass in the 13 th century.

3. Louis Pasteur: - Father of Microbiology - Discovered process of Pasteurization (killing microorganisms by mild heat.) 4. Robert Koch: - Koch proved germ theory of disease (disease is caused by microorganisms) - He developed methods to obtain pure culture of microorganisms. 5. Sir Alexander Fleming: - He discovered first wonder drug antibiotic which named Penicillin.

BRANCHES OF MICROBIOLOGY Bacteriology – Study of Bacteria Mycology – Study of Fungi Protozoology – Study of Protozoa Virology – Study of Viruses Parasitology – Study of Parasites

SCOPE OF MICROBIOLOGY IN NURSING - By studying microbiology, nurses accumulate knowledge regarding different pathogens and infections, their pathogenicity, clinical feature, transmission modes are known which may be beneficial while working in hospital settings. - By recognizing the symptoms of disease, medical emergencies can be sorted out preliminarily with nursing intervention. - Microbiology helps in understanding the various modes of transmission or spread of infection, sources of infection and procedure to control the spread of these infections. - Microbiology helps in understanding the role of our body’s immunity system in defending various infections.

- In nursing general hygiene and cleanliness is based on the principles of microbiology. Hospital infection control practices like aseptic techniques, wound washing or general hygiene are based on principles of microbiology. - Disposal of hospital wastes is again based on principles of medical microbiology. Infection control nurses play major role in such control policies. - Study of microbiology helps nurses know about the surfaces which are susceptible to infectious agent and methods to disinfect or sterilize them.
