CLASSIFICATION OF FEEDSTUFF Dr. P. Ravikanth Reddy MVSc , PhD Guest Faculty KBR College of Agriculture and Horticulture Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University Dr. YSR Horticulture University

Roughages More than 18% CF and less than 60% TDN . More bulky Less digestible More lignin (Critical factor for digestibility).

Maintenance type – 3 to 5% DCP - Green maize, Oat Non maintenance type – < 3% DCP - straw Production type - >5 DCP – Berseem and lucerne Paddy straw Lucerne Green maize

1) Green roughages 60-90% moisture Grasses Cultivated fodders Pastures Root crops Silages G rass

Pasture

Jowar fodder Maize fodder Cultivated Fodders Annuals

CO-4 Super Napier Perennials

Green fodder - chopped Silage

2) Dry roughages 10-15% moisture Straw Hay Stover Husk

Maize stover Paddy straw vs. Hay Paddy straw

Hay Husk

Concentrates Less than 18% CF and more than 60% TDN . Less bulky More digestible Less lignin (Critical factor for digestibility).

1) Energy rich Cereal grains, cereal mill byproducts, roots, and tubers. Tubers Deoiled rice bran

2) Protein rich Plant origin – Oil seed cakes, pulse chunnies , ddgs , oil meals, and yeast. Animal origin – fish meal, meat meal, blood meal, dried skim milk. DDGS CSC Blood meal

Feed supplements 1) Vitamin supplements - Rovimix , Vitablend . 2) Mineral supplements – Salt, limestone, dicalcium phosphate. Dicalcium phosphate

Feed additives Antibiotics – Terramycin , Zinc bacitracin Enzymes – Amylase, lipase, protease Hormones – estrogen, progesterone Thyroprotein – iodinated casein Probiotics – yeast, microbes, lactobacillus Biostimulators – extracts of living organs Antioxidants – Vitamin E, BHT Mold inhibitors – Propionic acid, acetic acid Pellet binders – molasses, sodium bentonite Coccidiostats – amprolium , lasalocid

Unconventional feed additives Not used traditionally Tamarind seed meal Neem seed cake Mahua seed cake

Classification of poultry feed stuffs Energy – Maize, jowar , millets, barley, wheat, dorb , salseed meal, tapioca meal, molasses, fats ( Tallow – Beef fat; Lard – Pork fat ), vegetable oils. Protein – Vegetable - GNC, SBM, SFC, Sesame cake, CSC, Maize gluten meal, Linseed cake . Animal – Fish meal, meat meal, blood meal, liver residue meal, silk worm pupae meal, hatchery byproduct meal.

SBM – Rich in lysine SFC – rich in arginine and methionine GNC – Rich in Arginine CSC – Gossypol toxin Maize gluten meal – Rich in Carotene and Xanthophyll Linseed Cake – Cyanogenic glycoside and Essential fatty acids . Fish meal – Can be fed up to 5% Meat meal – up to 5-10% Blood meal – up to 1.5-2.5% Linseed cake

Filler – To provide dietary fiber/bulk . Eg : corncobs, feathers, cotton seed hulls, citrus pulp, straw, dorb , wheat bran. Corn cobs Cotton seed hulls Citrus pulp

Unconventional feed ingredients for poultry – Mango-seed kernel – 15-18% maize can be replaced. Berseem meal – 15% CP Alfalfa meal – 20% CP Alfalfa meal
