What is Urban Design ?
Urban designis the process of designing and shaping the physical features
ofcities, towns, andvillagesandplanningfor the provision of municipal services to
residents and visitors. Although it deals with issues of a larger scale thanarchitecture, it
cannot be understood as a wholly separated field of research and design, since the
quality of one depends on the quality of the other. In fact, it is this veryinterdependency,
which has been termedrelational design
.

What is Urban Design ?
Urban design is the art of creating and shaping cities and towns. It involves the
arrangement and design of buildings, public spaces, transport systems, services, and
amenities. It is the process of giving form, shape, and character to groups of buildings, to
whole neighborhoods, and the city. It is a frameworkthat orders the elements into a
network of streets, squares, and blocks. Urban design blends architecture, landscape
architecture, and city planning together to make urban areas functional and attractive.

The building of cities is one of man’s greatest achievements.
The form of his city always has been and always will be a pitiless
indicator of the state of his civilization.
This form is determined by the multiplicity of decisions made by
the people who live in it. In certain circumstances these decisions

the people who live in it. In certain circumstances these decisions
have interacted to produce a force of such clarity and form that a
noble city has been born.

Hence Urban Design guidelines are now STATUTORY NORMS to imposed
and implemented by the local government to get a desired urban form.

competitive economic world for more and more area

Types of Urban Design guidelines
to implement Urban Design objectives
as per Jon Lang –Urban design –A typology of procedures and products
pg 205 chapter 8
A.Prescriptive
• Prescription for open spaces , streets and square
• Character and elements that define character of buildings
• Describe a pattern that a building complex, building or building component must take. –
eg–Building to have a band of a projection on its front façade at every 6 meters or every
building to have an arcade of 4,5 m high with terrace above used for public purposes
• Easy to enforce through building regulations especially where public authority has a
control or legal stake in development
•These guidelines are mandatory in nature •These guidelines are mandatory in nature
B.Performance
•These guidelines specify how building should work –eg. –No shadows should be cast
on the open space next to the building between 11am to 2pm. Or Shaded area to be
provided along front facade of the building by projecting 1
st
floor mass to accommodate
vendors before shops
•These guidelines can be enforced through development control rules
C.Advisory
• These are suggestive in nature with no tool to control through statutory measures –eg–
Two floors of the building should be commercial with ground floor dedicated to retail
