Urbanisation

1. Urbanisation means the redistribution of population and a
change in demographic balance between rural and urban

areas it is brought about by four factors

+ 2. Migration of people from rural to urban areas.

* 3. Reclassification of towns by which some large villages ask
they grow come under the classification of urban town .

+» A There are sporadic factors like wars ,partitions ,famines and

floods which results in massive migration aa

TRENDS IN URBANISATION

Urbanisation is sometimes referred to as “LOCATION REVOLUTION”

because it shifts people from smaller communities to larger

communities.
In1950 - 29%
In1975 -39%
In2000 - half rural and half urban

IMPACT ON URBANISATION

+ The impact of urbanization can be seen clearly. As societies become increasingly urbanized, the social emphasis
is placed on achievement rather than on ascription. Urbanization has brought about many changes in various
spheres of urban life.

« Physical dimensions

+ One of the indicators of urbanization is its bulging population mainly due to industrialization and greater scope
for employment. As a result, there has been a phenomenal increase in the demand for land but the availability
of space has shrunk very fast. Consequently, congestion and overcrowding of the city have happened. The civic

authorities have been facing the challenge of providing the necessary basic amenities for the existing population

of the cities.
