Urinary catheterisation is a procedure used to drain the bladder and collect urine, through a flexible tube called a catheter. Urinary catheters are usually inserted by doctors or nurses in hospital or the community.

3. Introduction  Urinary elimination is a normal process Where by urine is expelled from the the urinary bladder  Failure Of urinary elimination requires manual intervention to drain urine from the bladder by inserting a catheter in to bladder using sterile technique

4. D e f i n i t i o n  Urinary catheterization is the introduction of a catheter in to the Urinary bladder through urethra using aseptic technique for the purpose of emptying the bladder

24. Procedure  Explain procedure to the patient  Close door or draw curtain or screen the patient  Wash hand with soap water and put on clean sterile gloveo  Place a mackintosh with paper or towel under the patient buttocks

25.  Position the patient:- -male:- Supine position -Female:- Supine position with knee flexed  D r a p e t he p a t i e nt w i t h a b a t h b l ank e t c o v e r i n g both legs , legs,leaving genitalia exposed

26.  Wash the perineal area with warm soapy swabs, plain water soap  Wait for the dry the genital  Remove gloves and wash hands  Put on sterile gloves

28.  F e m a l e: - S p r e d l ab i a s w it h f i n g e r a nd t h u m b , c l e a n e s area from clitoris down to anus using one swab at a time  Male:- With a gloved hand ,pick up a cotton ball with forceps and clean the penis in a circular motion from urethral meatus

29.  Pick-up the catheter with a gloved hand 3- 4 inches from the catheter tip  Lubricate tip of the catheter with a sterile lubricant  Inserting catheter in female 2-4 inch and in male 7-9 inch

30.  Collect the urine specimen if required ,attach the drainage tubing if an indwelling catheter is put in  In f l a t e b a ll o o n w i t h t he r e q u i red a m ou n t of normal saline  Secure catheter tubing to the inner thigh with nonallergic tape

31.  Secure catheter tubing to the inner thigh with nonallergic tape

32. At the end of the procedure  Wash and dry the perineum to remove any urine left on the skin  Provide comfortable position  Replace the articles  Handwashing  Record and report

33. Conclusion  Urinary catheterization is a common intervention used by home healthcare pa t i e n t s t o ma n a g e U r i n a r y p ro b l e ms s u ch us Urinary retention and Urinary incontinence
