•Invention
Itwasinventedin1879byascientistnamedFranzvonSoxhlet.
Itwasfirstinventedforthequantificationoffatinthemilk.
Thenithasbeenfrequentlyusedfortheextractionoflipidsin
agriculturalchemistry.

•Principle
Lipidinfoodpresentinvariousformslikemonoglycerides,
diglycerides,triglyceridesandsterolandfreefattyacidand
phospholipidandcarotenoidsandfat-solublevitamins.
Lipidissolubleinorganicsolventandinsolubleinwater,becauseof
this,organicsolventslikehexane,petroleumetherhavetheabilityto
solubilizefatandfatisextractedfromfoodincombinationwiththe
solvent.
Laterthefatiscollectedbyevaporatingthesolvent.Almostallthe
solventisdistilledoffandcanbereused.

•Working Procedure

•Solid material placed in thimble. Soxhletextractor is placed onto a flask containing
the extraction solvent. Soxhaletequipped with condenser. The solvent is heated to
reflux.

•Thesolventvapourtravelsupadistillationarm,andfloodsintothechamberhousing
thethimbleofsolid.solidmaterialinchamberslowlyfillswarmsolvent.Desired
compounddissolvesinthewarmsolvent.

•The solvent running back down to the distillation flask. This cycle may be allowed to
repeat many times, over hours or days. During each cycle, a portion of the non-volatile
compound dissolves in the solvent.

•After many cycles the desired compound is concentrated in the distillation flask.
After extraction the solvent is removed, typically by means of a rotary evaporator,
yielding the extracted compound.

•Introduction

•Invention
AsimplerotaryevaporatorsystemwasinventedbyLymanC.Craig.It
wasfirstcommercializedbytheSwisscompanyin1957.

•Working Principle
Arotaryevaporatorevaporatessolventsfromsamplesbyutilizing
theprinciplethatthesolventwillhavealowerboilingpointata
reducedpressure.
Thebasicprincipleofrotaryevaporatorsisthevacuumdistillation
ofthedistillationflaskundercontinuousrotation.
Theevaporationflaskisheatedevenlybyawateroroilbath,and
materials,withalowerboilingpoint,isevaporatedrapidlyunderthe
vacuumcondition.Thesolventsteamisrecycledinthereceiving
flaskafterbeingcooledbythehighefficiencyglasscondenser.

•Rotary Evaporator’s Extraction Method
Theextractionprocessstartswiththewateroilbath.
Firstly,setuptheheatingtemperatureofthewateroilbath,whicharesupposedto
besameastheboilingpointofthecomponentstobeextracted.Duetotheboiling
pointswillbereducedwithdecreasingpressure,thecomponents’sboilingpoints
willlowerthanthatundernormalpressure.
Afterthecomponentstobeextractedgetevaporatedsuccessfully,itwillbe
transferredintothecondenserwheregas-phasesubstancewillbecooleddownand
becomesliquid-phase.
Theliquid-phasesubstanceiseasiertobecollectedthanthegas-phasesubstance.
Finally,afterthegas-phasebecomesliquid-phase,theextractedsubstancewillgo
intothereceivingflask,whichiseasyforuserstocollect.

biological,pharmaceutical,chemicalfieldsandevenfood-making
industries.
