BACKGROUND In 2021 and 2022, Mizoram faced widespread forest fires. Lunglei , with 77,482 residents (2011 Census), was severely affected by a forest fire on April 24, 2022. Significance : The largest wildfire in Mizoram’s history, threatening both forest and populated areas.
FIRE OUTBREAK DETAILS Location : Uninhabited forest areas around Lunglei . Spread : Covered over 10 village council areas. Risk : Fire reached some localities ( Zotlang , Serkawn , Chanmari ) but was contained before major damage.
IMMEDIATE RESPONSE BY LUNGLEI FIRE STATION EMERGENCY CALL Time of call : 11:40 AM, August 24, 2021. Response Time : 6 minutes, reaching by 11:46 AM. FIREFIGHTING RESOURCES Total water used : 1,50,000 liters (sourced from fire hydrants, rivers, ponds, and lakes). Firefighters : 20 (11 from Lunglei , 6 additional from Aizawl ).Equipment: 4 Fire Tenders.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN FIREFIGHTING LOCAL CONTRIBUTIONS : Residents joined efforts with buckets, fetching water from homes. Local involvement helped protect lower hilly areas and prevent the fire from reaching urban zones.
CHALLENGES FACED EXTENDED OPERATION : Firefighters worked continuously for over 36 hours, with no time for rest. Multiple fire outbreaks required quick mobility and sustained effort. LIMITED RESOURCES : Small team handling a massive fire threat across a large area.
SUCCESSFUL CONTAINMENT AND IMPACT Results : No human casualties or major property losses. Animal habitats, homes, and gardens in Lunglei were preserved. Community Gratitude : Residents expressed deep appreciation for the bravery of the firefighting team.
RECOGNITION BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES Deputy Commissioner’s Acknowledgment : Firefighters were invited for a tea ceremony. Each team member received a letter of appreciation for their efforts.
SUPPORT FROM THE INDIAN AIR FORCE Aerial Assistance : Two Mi-17V5 helicopters with Bambi Buckets were deployed. The helicopters helped douse flames across difficult-to-reach areas, including adjacent villages.
KEY LESSONS LEARNED Importance of Quick Response : Timely intervention was crucial to prevent disaster. Community and Agency Collaboration : Joint efforts between residents, firefighters, and external agencies were essential in containment. Resilience and Dedication : The Lunglei Fire Station team’s commitment underlined the value of readiness and courage.

Cash Prize : Rs . 51 lakhs, awarded to the Lunglei Fire Station team.
