Various Disciplines of Civil Engineering There are six major disciplines within C ivil E ngineering . They are: Structural , W ater resources, Environmental , Geotechnical , T ransportation , and C onstruction E ngineering. Materials engineering Each one of these disciplines has a unique set of challenges and problems to solve . 

1) Structural engineering Structural engineering is a field of civil engineering that deals with the analysis and design of structures, such as buildings, bridges, dams, and tunnels. Structural engineers are responsible for making sure that these structures are safe and stable . Structural engineering is a challenging field that requires a strong understanding of mathematics and physics . Structural engineers must be able to think creatively to solve complex problems . structural engineering is constantly evolving as new technologies are developed. Structural engineers must keep up with the latest advancements in order to provide the best possible designs for their clients.

2) Geotechnical engineering Geotechnical engineering deals with the assessment and improvement of soil and rock properties. It helps to ensure the stability and safety of buildings, bridges, dams, and other structures. Geotechnical engineers use a variety of techniques to assess soil and rock properties, including laboratory testing, field investigation, and computer modelling . They also develop methods to improve the strength and stability of soils and rocks, such as grouting and soil reinforcement. Geotechnical engineering is an essential part of civil engineering, and its practitioners play a vital role in ensuring the safety and stability of our built environment.

3) Water resources engineering Water resources engineering deals with the assessment, development, and management of water resources. It is a multidisciplinary field that incorporates elements of hydrology, meteorology, geology, and environmental engineering. Water resources engineers work to develop reliable water supplies through the efficient use of limited water resources. They also work to minimize the impact of floods and droughts on communities and ecosystems. In recent years, water resources engineering has taken on greater importance as the world confronts the challenges of climate change and population growth.

4) Environmental engineering Environmental engineering deals with the protection and improvement of human health and the environment. It is a relatively new field, only coming into existence in the early 20th century. The main goal of environmental engineering is to find ways to minimize pollution and other environmental hazards. This can be done through a variety of means, such as improving technology, developing better policies, or creating public awareness campaigns. Some specific areas of focus for environmental engineers include water and air pollution, solid waste management, and climate change. They may also work on projects related to sustainable development or energy conservation.

5) Construction engineering Construction engineering is the application of engineering principles and technologies to the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of structures, machines and systems. Construction engineers   are responsible for the development and management of construction projects. They work with architects, planners, surveyors and other professionals to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget and to the required standard. Construction engineers often specialize in a particular type of project, such as bridges, roads or residential or commercial buildings.

6) Transportation engineering Transportation engineering deals with the design, construction and maintenance of transport systems. This can include anything from roads and railways to air traffic control and port facilities. Transportation engineers need to have a strong understanding of physics, mathematics and computer science in order to be able to design efficient and safe transport systems. They also need to be able to think creatively in order to come up with innovative solutions to problems. With the ever-growing population and the ever-increasing demand for travel, transportation engineering is a field that will continue to grow in importance in the years to come.

7) Materials engineering This specialization involves the study of all items and components required for a construction project, such as wood, steel and concrete. They may also study stones, soil, plastics and fabrics, depending on a university program's requirements. Materials engineering students learn the chemical properties of these items, which allows them to determine the best possible materials for a project or adjust them on an atomic level.

8)Surveying This type of civil engineering branch handles the surveying and levelling of land by using different instruments to map and contour the terrain. This is done to locate and measure property lines, and lay out buildings, bridges, channels, highways, and pipelines for construction. Surveyors are generally classified into two categories: plane surveying and geodetic surveying.
