Historic roots of Visual Communication

VISUAL COMMUNICATION Visual Communication 1 Origins Wasif Hussain LSE

Where it all began?

HELLO, STONEAGE And it is sometime divided into three parts for simpler understanding: Paleolithic Mesolithic Neolithic Part of three-age system . The Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age

HELLO, STONEAGE is concerned with the origins and development of early human  culture  between the first appearance of human beings as tool-using mammals (which is believed to have occurred sometime before 3.3 million years ago) and about 8000  BCE Part of three-age system . The Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age

Paleolithic Paleolithic Period , also called  Old Stone Age , ancient cultural stage, or level, of human development, characterized by the use of  rudimentary  chipped  STONE TOOLS . The onset of the Paleolithic Period has traditionally coincided with the first evidence of  tool  construction and use by  Homo  some 2.58 million years ago, near the beginning of the  Pleistocene Epoch  (2.58 million to 11,700 years ago).  - https://www.britannica.com/event/Paleolithic-Period 3.3 million years ago -Wiki

Mesolithic Mesolithic , also called  Middle Stone Age , ancient cultural stage that existed between the  Paleolithic  (Old Stone Age), with its chipped  stone tools , and the  Neolithic  (New Stone Age), with its polished stone tools.  Because the Mesolithic is characterized by a suite of material culture , its timing varies depending upon location. In northwestern  Europe , for instance, the Mesolithic began about 8000  BCE , after the end of the  Pleistocene Epoch  (i.e., about 2,600,000 to 11,700 years ago), and lasted until about 2700  BCE . Elsewhere the dates of the Mesolithic are somewhat different . - https ://www.britannica.com/event/Mesolithic 20,000 to 8,000 BP (Southwest Asia); 15,000–5,000 BP (Europe ) -Wiki

Neolithic Neolithic , also called  New Stone Age , final stage of  cultural evolution  or technological development among prehistoric humans. It was characterized by  stone tools  shaped by polishing or grinding, dependence on  domesticated  plants or animals, settlement in permanent villages, and the appearance of such crafts as  pottery  and  weaving . The Neolithic followed the  Paleolithic Period , or age of chipped-stone tools, and preceded the  Bronze Age , or early period of metal tools . - https://www.britannica.com/event/Neolithic 10,000–4,500 BC -Wiki

Cave Art

Paintings in the Pachimari Caves [Madhya Pardesh ] in India Pachimari Caves 9000–3000 B.C.

MESOLITHIC ( 8,000 B.C. to 6,000/4,000 B.C.) Petro glyphs Glyph: an elemental symbol within an agreed set of symbols, intended to represent a readable character for the purposes of writing.

MESOLITHIC ( 8,000 B.C. to 6,000/4,000 B.C.) The Mesolithic period saw painting move out of the caves and onto the rocks. Painting also became more symbolic and abstract.

The carvings were left by various invaders, traders and pilgrims who passed along the Silk Road trade route, as well as by locals. The earliest date back to between 5000 BCE and 1000 AD, showing single animals, triangular men and hunting scenes in which the animals sometimes are larger than the hunters.  -Ancient Pakistan .
