Verbs: verb is a word that expresses an action, occurrence, or state of being. Verbs are essential to the structure of sentences because they describe what the subject is doing or what is happening to it. Verb Phrases There isn't one absolute definition of a verb phrase. A common definition is that a verb phrase can consist of just the main verb or the main verb plus any modal verbs or auxiliary verbs. Verb phrase examples Kanoko climbed Mount Everest. Types of Verbs Phares 2. State of Being Verbs (Linking Verbs): These describe a state, linking the subject to more information without showing action. Common linking verbs include: be (is, am, are, was, were), seem, become, appear. 1. Action Verbs - Physical actions: run, jump, swim. - Mental actions: think, believe, imagine. Example: She runs every morning. Examples of Verb Phrases: 1. With Auxiliary Verbs: - The verb phrase includes auxiliary verbs (have, be, do) plus a main verb. - Example: She is studying for her exams. - "is" (auxiliary verb) + "studying" (main verb). 4. Modal Verbs: This express ability, permission, possibility, or necessity. Common modal verbs include: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, would. Example: He can swim very fast. 3. Auxiliary (Helping) Verbs: These verbs are used together with a main verb to express tense, mood, or voice. Common auxiliary verbs include: be, do, have. Example: She has finished her homework.

Verb Tenses: Verbs change form to show when an action occurs. The three basic tenses are: Present: Actions happening now. Example: She eats lunch. Past: Actions that happened before. Example: They played soccer. Future: Actions that will happen. Example: We will travel next week.   Example With Modal Verbs: - The verb phrase includes a modal verb and a main verb. - Example: They will arrive tomorrow. - "will" (modal verb) + "arrive" (main verb).   Extended Verb Phrases: A verb phrase can include objects, complements, or modifiers. Example: He has been working hard. "has been" (auxiliaries) + "working" (main verb) + "hard" (modifier). Common Verb Phrase Structures: Present Continuous (be + verb- ing ): Example: She is watching TV. Present Perfect (have/has + past participle): Example: They have finished homework. Students practice defining and changing verbs and verb phrases to different tenses.
