Audience and Institution Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication mainly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. The magazine’s target demographic is predominantly young, urban followers of hip-hop and R&B culture.
Front Cover
Representation The cover features Usher – a stereotypical, black, male, R&B artist to which the audience is familiar with. He is looking straight at the reader to establish a relationship with them. However, by wearing sunglasses he maintains the perception of being superior.
Mise - En-Scene The model (Usher) is dressed as a pilot and walking on a runway in front of a plane, this builds up his persona of being a worldwide R&B star. To add to this there are no other people in the shot, this reinforces the quote, ‘there is no competition’.
Typography The same, bold yellow and white font has been used throughout. The use of lower case letters gives a less formal effect, similarly the colour yellow is more relaxed and has connotations of youth as it is vibrant. One and two word puffs and punchy short sentences make the magazine sound fast paced, like the music industry, keeping the audience interested. The puffs surround the model, highlighting his face and body. The title is in black which makes it stand out. The name ‘Vibe’ is the word used to describe the atmosphere of a place, this has connotations of being current and in keeping with the current vibe.
Language The anchorage text links the central image to the topics of the article about Usher.
