Virus A Virus is a type of computer program that can spread from one computer to another and damage files, programs or the system. It slow down the computer, deleting data or stopping programs from working. Virus Spreads by: Visiting a malicious website. Installing pirated software(s). Downloading the free games, toolbars, media players, etc. If you open a spam email that is sent by an unknown person.
How Do Computer Viruses Work? A virus hides inside a file or program. When someone opens that file or runs the infected program, the virus code starts. The virus copies itself into other files, programs or system areas so it stays on the computer. It finds other files, removable drives or networked computers and copies itself there. At a certain time or event, the virus does its harmful action — e.g., delete files, slow the computer, show messages or steal data. If the infected files are shared, the virus goes to other computers.
Types of computer virus Boot Sector Virus: This virus attacks the part of your computer that runs first when you turn it on. It can stop your computer from starting and spreads when you use infected USB drives or disks. File Infector Virus: This virus hides inside files or programs. When you open an infected file, it can quickly spread to other files and computers. Multipartite Virus: A virus that can infect programs, files and the boot sector at the same time. Resident Virus: This virus stays active in your computer’s memory, even if you close the infected file, it can keep spreading to other programs whenever you open them.
Types of computer virus Web Scripting Virus: This virus attacks your web browser. It can let hackers put harmful code on websites or run malicious code when you visit a page. Browser Hijacker: This virus changes your browser settings without permission. It can replace your homepage, change the new tab page, or set a different search engine. Direct Action Virus: This virus quickly attacks the computer’s memory and infects programs, files, and folders as soon as it runs.

Real-time Scanning Monitors programs as they run and blocks any harmful actions immediately.
Benefits of antivirus software Detecting, preventing and removing malware and viruses Scanning in real time Protecting external devices Blocking scam sites Making devices faster
Drawbacks of antivirus Slowing down devices and system updates Limited detection techniques No complete protection by free software's No customer support
