Viscosity refers to the measure of a fluid’s resistance to flow. It describes how thick or sticky a fluid is and indicates the internal friction within the fluid as its molecules move past each other. In simple terms, the higher the viscosity, the slower a fluid flows, and vice versa. Types of Viscosity; Dynamic Viscosity (Absolute Viscosity) : This type measures a fluid’s internal resistance to flow when subjected to a shear force. It is typically measured in units of Pascal-seconds ( Pa·s ) or poise (P). The dynamic viscosity describes how much force is required to make a fluid flow at a given rate. Example: Honey has high dynamic viscosity compared to water.

Kinematic Viscosity; Kinematic viscosity is the ratio of dynamic viscosity to the fluid’s density. It is a measure of how a fluid flows under the influence of gravity. It is typically measured in units of square meters per second (m²/s) or stokes (St). Apparent Viscosity; This type is used for fluids whose viscosity changes with the rate of flow, such as non-Newtonian fluids (which do not obey Newton’s law of viscosity).
