Voluntary Control and Assessment DR. SUSAN JOSE
Voluntary control of movements Ability to volitionally produce and control movements. SYNERGY NORMAL – functionally linked muscles that are constrained by the CNS to act cooperatively to produce an intended motor action, these are modifiable based on the task and environmental needs. ABNORMAL - movements and muscle activation which is stereotypical and non adaptable to the task and environmental demands.
assessment GRADING- Qualitative Assessment- 0- no movement 1-flicker at the proximal joint 2- half range of motion in synergy 3- full range of motion in synergy 4- starts in isolation goes into synergy pattern 5- full range in isolation, with resistance synergy pattern returns 6- isolation present even with resistance, (check MMT now)
Quantitative assessment FUGL-MEYER ASSESSMENT SCALE- Motor score- upper extremity and the lower extremity Sensation - light touch and proprioception Balance - sitting and standing balance Joint range of motion Joint pain
TRUNK CONTROL ASSESSMENT SCALES Trunk Impairment Scale- Static Sitting Dynamic Sitting Coordination Of Upper And Lower Trunk
SUMMARY Voluntary control is the ability to move and adapt to changing environment and task demands. Cerebral Cortex controls voluntary movements. Assessment of VC can be qualitative and quantitative. Good assessments give way to good treatment.
