WATER MANAGEMENT AT KANHERI Kanehri caves are known for their sophisticated water management system. The system contains Rock-cut Cisterns , Aqueducts and Channels, Water Filtration. These systems conserves water from Rainwater Harvesting and Natural Springs .

NAME SIGNIFICANCE Kanheri , known as Krishnagiri or Kanhagiri in an ancient inscription. It literally means black mountain Krishna means black Giri is a mountain Its named after its black basalt stone.
FACT Kanehri caves are ancient Buddhist rock-cut caves ( 1 to 10 CE). It lies 1500 feet above sea level. There are 129 caves in Kanheri Buddhist monks lived, studied, meditated , and spread the teachings of Gautama Buddha. It was a temporary residence or ‘ vasha vaasa ’ (rain shelter) The caves were also used as shelters during the monsoon.

1) RESERVOIRS AND TANKS
There are water tanks at different levels which provide water to different category of people at the same time! The water tank at the highest level is meant for the monks or the teachers . 2 nd Lower are reserved for the disciples of the monks. 3 rd Lower are for the business class or traders. The lowest are for the animals to drink from during summer month. All these water tanks used to be covered with wooden lids , which are no longer present. Observe the outflow channels at each level, which lead the excess water into the next water tank and not a drop must be wasted!
2) Channel System The channels carved in the floor drain the water away from the steps , helping them to keep dry as far as possible!
They even made channels inside the caves along its wall to channel water to the tanks.
3) WATER DISTRIBUTTION Water channels outside the cave lead the fresh rain water to the water cisterns even now!
4) RAINWATER HARVESTING TECHNIQUES When it rains, these water channels do not allow the water to fall on the entrance of the cave and drain them properly for storage inside the water cisterns!
