Waveguide

Todays Outline Concept about Waveguide History Types of Wave guide Different Modes of Waveguide Application of Waveguide

Waveguide

Any linear structure that conveys electromagnetic waves between its endpoints

A device that confines electromagnetic energy and channels it from one point to another.

Want big impact? Use big image.

History

First proposed by J.J Thompson in 1893 Experimentally verified by Oliver lodge In 1897 Rayleigh first performed the mathematical analysis

Types of Waveguide

1. Rectangular Waveguide 2. Circular Waveguide

Rectangular Waveguide Dominant mode is TE 10 Supports TM and TE modes but not TEM waves There is only one conductor Bands between 1 GHz to above 220 GHz. The highest possible band width allowing only a single mode to propagate is only 2:1

Circular Waveguide Dominant mode is TE11. Cutoff Frequency equation, fc = (1.8412 * c /2*pi*a) The highest possible band width allowing only a single mode to propagate is only 1.3601:1

Modes of Waveguide

1. TE Mode 2. TM Mode 3. TEM Mode

TE(Transverse Electric) Mode Electric field is perpendicular to direction of propagation. Magnetic components are in the direction of propagation. TE modes (transverse electric) have no electric field in the direction of propagation. TE mode is subdivided into TE10, TE11, TE20, TE01

TM(Transverse Magnetic) Mode Magnetic field is perpendicular to direction of propagation. Electric components are in the direction of propagation. TM modes have no magnetic field in the direction of propagation. TM mode is subdivided into TM11, TM 2 1

TEM(Transverse Magnetic) Mode Both Electric & Magnetic field of signal is perpendicular to direction of propagation. In TM modes both electric and magnetic field are directed components TEM mode is subdivided into TM11, TM 2 1

Uses of waveguide

U ses of Waveguide To carry high frequency radio waves, particularly microwaves. It is used to handle high power energy. Waveguide is used in communication system. It is mostly used in airborne radar. Waveguide is used in the devices of navigation aids.
