Surin Province is one of the major silk making provinces with over 10,000 out of the total 60,000 silk farmers in Thailand.
Phearam is a community in Surin with unique sericulture practice. They are organic and friendly to the environment.
Sericulture is one of the occupations that will be most affected by climate change.
The Foundation for Community Soul has been supported by UNDP-AFCIA, funded by the European Union, to introduce, through a gender lens, innovations that will empower the community to mitigate climate change. The project is titled "Climate Smart Farmer Model for Mulberry Cultivation in Surin Province, Thailand". The first phase of the project have had over 1,200 farmers benefitting from its activities.
And, over 500 of them have weather forecast application on their phone and know how to use it. It is expected that 3,000 more mulberry silk farmers will benefit, with about 10-20% income rise, from joining the second phase of the project in 2025.
