About This Presentation

The role of the positive crankcase ventilation system in the car is to remove harmful vapors and relieve unwanted pressure from the engine’s crankcase. Basically, it uses manifold vacuum to draw vapors. The PCV system contains a filter that filters the blow by gases to ensure that the gases are cl...

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF A BAD POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION FILTER IN A CAR?

The primary job of a positive crankcase ventilation system or PCV is to get rid of the blow-by gases from the crankcase and reuse such gases in the combustion chamber.

By doing so, it prevents air pollution as well as also increases the efficiency of the engine.

Any kinds of mechanical failures in such an important system might have disastrous consequences.

Blow by gases enters the combustion chamber through a filter which helps to get rid of the contaminants.

Clogged or damaged PCV filter might affects the performance of a car in a very adverse way.

So, everyone should be aware of the early warning signs of a clogged or failed PCV filter in a car in order to spot and fix the problems in time.

SIGNS OF A BAD PCV FILTER

Blow by gases could not pass through the contaminated or clogged filter which could build up pressure inside the crankcase. ENGINE OIL LEAKAGE

Higher pressure inside the crankcase would damage the oil pan gasket.

So, engine oil leakage is an early warning sign of a clogged PCV filter in a car.

Such warning signs should not be ignored.

Clogged or defective PCV filter could affect the fuel to air ratio inside the combustion chamber of an engine. POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE

The presence of a disproportionate amount of fuel or air inside the combustion chamber could adversely affect the power output of an engine.

So, if the engine is not making the required quantity of acceleration, then it clearly indicates that something is not right and needs immediate attention.

The primary function of the PCV system is to divert the blow by unburned hydrocarbons to the combustion chamber instead of the exhaust system. UNBURNED HYDROCARBONS IN THE EXHAUST GASES

However, clogged or defective PCV filter fails to do its job.

So, the presence of an excess amount of unburned hydrocarbons in the combustion chamber should not be neglected.

FINALLY

Deposition of contaminants on the PCV filter could jeopardize the engine.

So, signs of a failed PCV filter should not be ignored.

Efforts should be made to keep the filter clean and clogged filters should be replaced immediately.
