WAN
Internet services
•A network that spans a large geographical distance, connecting multiple Local Area Networks (LANs) over a wide area such as a city, country, or even the entire world. •Communication methods include cables, microwaves, radio waves, and satellites. Wide Area Networks
Purposes and role of WAN The main purpose of a WAN is to connect LANs together. Facilitate communication between users over a large distance. Share a central data source. The Internet is a huge collection of LANs, servers and computers connected to each other by communication channels
GROUP WORK Instructions You will be grouped by the teacher. Your group must choose one of the purposes of WAN. Work together and discuss the purpose. Then the group must explain the purpose chosen to the class. Please make sure each member contributes to the explanation.
Internet services •Internet services are the various tools and applications that allow you to utilize the Internet’s capabilities. •In this presentation, the internet services that are going to be discussed are: Real-time messaging, Voice over Internet Protocol, File transfer protocol, and File sharing
•Real-time messaging is also known as instant messaging (IM). • Users exchange messages immediately, while other systems such as e-mail have a delay. •Allows users cheaper communication and multiple users at a time. VoIP, Voice over Internet protocol It's a technology that lets you make and receive phone calls using your internet connection instead of a traditional landline. Real-time messaging
Advantages and disadvantages of VoIP ADVANTAGES •Much cheaper than normal telephone calls •Text messages and file transfers can happen while you are talking using VoIP •Video communication is also possible via VoIP DISADVANTAGES •Audio quality is very low •Calls can sometimes break and delays in communication can happen •Specific software needs to be installed, for example, Skype •Very difficult to trace the call in an emergency because there is no fixed location
•File transfer protocol establishes a connection between a client computer and a server computer, allowing you to transfer files between them. •Internet service used to transfer files over the Internet. •With file sharing, data is stored on servers around the world using the Internet to transfer files, examples include Dropbox and SkyDrive. File transfer protocol and File sharing
Advantages and disadvantages of file sharing ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES •The latest version of your files will always be available to other users because the files are constantly synchronised , even when you modify them. •You can store the files and send the link to another user via e-mail. This means that you do not have a problem trying to attach large files to an e-mail •There is no guarantee that your documents will be kept private. •You will not be able to use your files if there is no Internet connection available •If you have reached your cap limit, you will not be able to access your data
