What is an Operating System Operating System is the most critical component of a computer which is also referred to as OS. It is the software whose welcome screen is displayed when the computer is first turned on and the software whose farewell screen is shown when the computer is turned off. You are using the OS every time you do anything with the computer.

The Role of the Operating System The operating system provides a way for you to communicate with the computer. It essentially does two things – manages hardware and software resources and offers consistency so that many different computers can use different applications or hardware devices.

The operating system is responsible for the following tasks: Processor management Memory management Device management File management Consistent user interface

The Windows Desktop Most Windows desktops have the same features, though different users may prefer another arrangement. The desktop contains small pictures on the screen that represent something. The pictures are called icons.

What is a Microsoft Window? Microsoft has called their operating system Windows. To gain an understanding of Windows operating system, let’s consider the windows in your home. To begin, a window is transparent, allowing you to view outdoors. In addition it provides security from the elements, as it prevents rain snow, or wind from entering your home. It is a physical structure that can be opened or closed. In addition, it can be adorned with curtains to create a custom look to any room.

What is a Microsoft Window? How does a real window compare to the Windows operating system? The Windows operating system uses a rectangular shaped container to display the contents of the computer. Whenever an application or folder is opened it appears in frame called window. Similar to the transparent nature of a real window, the Microsoft window allows the computer directory to become visible. Likewise, the Microsoft window can be opened or closed. The appearance can also be customized to suit your preferences. To open a window you Double click on the Windows folder on the desktop.
