CURRENT AFFAIRS
Haji Ali open to women
The Bombay High Court had ruled in favour of women
activists who wanted entry into the inner sanctum
of the dargah. Uttar Pradesh’s first woman qazi Dr.
Hina Zaheer Naqvi said the verdict came as “a great
satisfaction to women”. “I appreciate the court’s verdict
and welcome it from the bottom of my heart,” she
added. “The verdict came as a great satisfaction to
women, because there was segregation between men
and women, which implied that men had an upper
hand. Islam gives women equal status and there is
no discrimination with women. Above all, if women
can go to the Khaana-e-Kaaba by following the laid
down norms, why cannot at other dargahs, except
those which have maintained restrictions since the
beginning and never entered in the family life like
Makanpur dargah, where there are restrictions since
the beginning, a system has developed there, and no
woman tries to go there as well,” she said.
India for talks only on Islamabad
vacating PoK and stopping terror
In a hardening stand on talks, New Delhi has sent
another letter to Islamabad, outlining the need for
talks on battling terror emanating from Pakistan
that targets “not just India, but other countries in the
region”. Bangladesh, angry over the Dhaka cafe
attack and others that it links to Pakistani support,
has refused to send high level officials to any of the
SAARC related events in Pakistan. Afghanistan’s
President Ghani has also said terror attack on the
American University in Kabul where 13 people,
including teachers and students, were killed, was
“organised” in Pakistan.

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM Rahul Gandhi denies blaming RSS for
Gandhi assassination in the Supreme
Court
In the Supreme Court, Rahul Gandhi had drawn a
distinction between the RSS as an organization and
the activities of individuals associated with the RSS.
He also clarified that he never implied that the RSS
was involved in the murder conspiracy. In an act of
Pappuism, Mr Gandhi wrote on Twitter, “I will never
stop fighting the hateful and divisive agenda of the
RSS. I stand by every single word I said.” “Stand by
every word I said about RSS: R Gandhi. Which words,
in affidavit filed in court of the ‘lie’ uttered in public
speech?” Manmohan Vaidya of the RSS asked Mr
Gandhi on Twitter.
Concerned on Human Rights
violations in Baluchistan, Modi
Speaking from the ramparts of the 17th-century
Red Fort in Old Delhi on Aug. 15, Modi thanked the
Baluch people for their support after a number of
separatist leaders published videos praising him
for acknowledging their cause previously. He also
lashed out at supporters of “terrorism”, in a more
familiar broadside against India’s old foe. Referring to
Baluchistan in such a prominent speech is an highly
unusual move bound to ratchet up tensions between
the nuclear-armed neighbours more used to trading
barbs over Kashmir, the cause of two of their three
wars.

Nicolas Sarkozy projects for
Presidency
“I will be the president that re-establishes the authority
of the state. I want to be the president who guarantees
the safety of France and of every French person,”
Sarkozy told a crowd in a sports hall in Chateaurenard
in Provence. “I refuse to let the burkini impose itself in
French beaches and swimming pools, there must be
a law to ban it throughout the republic’s territory,” he
said. Sarkozy is seeking to win back votes from the far-
right and his rising popularity mirrors that of populist
politicians in other countries that have appealed to
voters concerned about globalisation and immigration,
such as US Republican presidential nominee Donald
Trump and the leaders of Britain’s Brexit campaign.
Assassination attempt on German
Chancellor
An assassination attempt on German Chancellor
Angela Merkel has reportedly been foiled as Czech
police. “The perpetrator has been detained,” police
spokesman Josef Bocan said. “He is suspected
of attempting to cause a crime, specifically an
attempt to use violence against an official,” he
said. “The incident is currently being investigated
by Prague detectives.” Markel, who was in Prague
to meet Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka,
was travelling from the airport to the city, when the
suspicious Black Mercedes appeared. The driver
refused to obey orders coming from the police cars
accompanying the German Chancellor.

word Aar means Athi tree (Ficus
glomerata) which has various
applications in Ayurvedic medicine.
Previously this region was
surrounded with full of Athi trees.
Also in the north of Arni, there is
a river by name Kamandala Naga
River. These trees and river look
like an ornament hence the name
Arni. Arni was ruled by Cholas
after they defeated Pallavas.
The main occupation of the people
of Arni is in the field of Agriculture,
Weaving, Growing Honey-bees
and Poultry Farms. Arni is popular
for its silk-weaving community.
The town is also well known for its
Paddy and Rice Business.
In olden days Arni was called

Aranyam is now called as Arni. The
Arni is located in the district of Thiruvannamalai
in the state of Tamilnadu. Arni is one of the
most important Silk centers of Tamil Nadu. The
town is situated at a distance of 132 kms to
the West of Chennai. Arni - the city of silk is

There is also a Palace near
by the town, which is now
used by the Agriculture
Department. The freedom
movement in Arni was started
by A.M Parasurama Naicker,
M.V. Subramanian Sasthriar,
Y.N. Govindaraju Chettiar,
etc. In1922, Mahatma
Gandhi came to Arni twice to
attend a meeting for Harijan’s
development. The above
mentioned people welcomed
Gandhiji and also they took
Sirasu (head) for performing
puja by devotees and to offer
them her blessings. She
took her body to Swargaloga
(Heaven) along with Saint
Jamathagni. This beautiful
pastoral village was once
the capital of Sambuvarayar
Dynasty.
During Nawab’s period there
was a struggle between
Britishers, Frankie’s and
Nawab Hyder Ali. Finally,
Britishers won the struggle
Some of the important Chola
kings who ruled Arni are
Kulothunga Cholan, Vikrama
Cholan, Second Kulothunga
Cholan, etc. During the rule
of Vijayanagara Kingdom at
Arni, Dasara function was
celebrated grandly.
Poosi Malai Kuppam is
12Kms away from Arni.
Thirumalai Saheb built a
sophisticated bungalow for
his lovable Anglo-Indian
lady there. Nestled among
the hills between Arni and
Vellore is a village called
Padaiveedu. Padaiveedu is
one of the most important
‘Sakthi Sthalas’ (place of
power) in Thondainadu
(a part of Tamil Nadu).
Goddess Renugambal
has self-manifested in this
place, indicating “Sakthi is
everything in this world” and
offering her blessings along
with Brahma, Vishnu and
Lord Siva.
In this place a number of
sages performed penance
and attained salvation. The
existence of Banalingam
and Nanakarshna Chakra
consecrated by Adi
Sankaracharya is the
specialty of this place. This
is the place where Saint
Jamathagni did penance and
attained Mukthi (salvation).
As blessed by Lord Siva,
Mother Renugambal kept her

Encircled by mountains and
hills, this place consists
of 17 villages. Though the
town is not well known
outside of Tamilnadu, a
bulk of India’s silk apparel is
produced by the people of
this town. Weaving is done
by ladies and gents. Arni is
well known for its traditional
Arni Handlooms silk fabrics.
Arni handlooms are well
known for the durability of
the colours used in the yarn.
Usually Arni handlooms are
made in silk.
The count used in weaving
gives the softness and
hardness of the fabric. The
count in a handloom fabric
means the number of threads
woven length wise and
breadth wise known as warp
and wept respectively in a
square inch. The count in the
saree is 2400 which gives
strength to the fabric and
durability. That means that
there will be 2400 threads in
warp and wept.
The weavers are in this
profession by tradition.
The first flag hoisted in
the Red Fort on the day of
independence of India is a
silk flag weaved in Arni.
Processing of
Handloom fabric
Dyeing:
- First the yarn
is washed and then dipped

mixed in the yarn. The
most important aspect in
this process is the mixing
of colours which will give
unique and durable colour to
the fabric. These yarns are
then starched. Starching of
the yarn is where the colour
in the yarn will get more
permanent nature and gives
the yarn a polished look.
Then it is turned in a charka.
The turning in charka is
where the yarn will become
thread, which is used for
wept.
The loading of yarn in warp
is the next process. Then
yarn is loaded into the looms.
The length of yarn which is
loaded as warp is known as
Pavvu. A weaver can make
four sarees from one pavvu.
It will take a week to weave
one pavvu of four sarees.
Weaving: - The looms
used in Arni are mostly
Frame looms. Frame looms
are looms which are fixed in
a frame and looms peddle
will be at the floor level and
the weaver will sit on a stool
and use his hands and legs
to weave.
To create designs in the
sarees, firstly, the design is
been made in a computer
and then that design is
punched into thick cards and
then this card is loaded into
the Jacard in the loom, so
INDIAN DIASPORA FINE ART

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM that according to the designs
and the holes in the card,
the needles will pull and put
the threads which will create
designs in the saree while
weaving. Jacard is a box like
structure at the top of the
loom which contains needles
which will read the punch
card of designs.
The weavers are into this
profession traditionally. None
of the weavers are trained
but they have acquired this
unique skill hereditarily from
their ancestors. The art of
weaving is passed on by the
way of vision and practice.
There are no theoretical
explanations or training for
weaving.
The handlooms fabrics of
Arni are famous for the
softness and durability.
The handloom fabrics are
soft and comfortable to
wear and is suitable for all
climates. Mainly, Arni looms
manufacture silk sarees, but
now as per demand dress
materials are also weaved.
The specialty of Arni sarees
are a saree is made with two
different bodies on each side
and two different pallus which
can be used as two different
sarees.
Simillarly, sarees are
designed so shrewdly that
in one side of the body half
will be in one colour and the
other half with another colour
and at the two ends different
pallus and in the other side
the entire body will be of one
colour with one pallu. This
saree can be used as three
sarees.
Another complicated design
is that in one side of the
saree there will two different
colour in half portion each
and at the two end two
pallus, like that in the other
side also two different colour
in each half and two different
pallus, so that this saree
can be used as four different
sarees.
Arni is known for its special
designs in the pallus.

Khejarli trees. Nearly two
centuries ago, Maharajah
Abhay Singh of Jodhpur
required wood for the
construction of his new
palace. The king sent his
soldiers to cut trees in the
nearby region of Khejarli,
where the village is filled
with the large number of
trees.
Amrita Devi and local
villagers came to know
about it and stopped the
king’s men. They told her
that if she wanted the trees
to be spared, she would
have to bribe them. She
refused to acknowledge this
demand and told them that
she would consider it as an
act of insult to her religious
faith and would rather give
away her life to save the
green trees.
This is still remembered as
the great Khejarli sacrifice.
Bishnois who were killed
while protecting the trees
were buried in Khejerli
village near Jodhpur, where
a simple grave with four
pillars had been erected.
Every year, in September,

The people of `Sahariyas’ tribe
never used to bother about
their future, because they were
confident that forests, which they
respect and protect, would never
leave them hungry. The other
groups of society have exploited
the forests to the tilt, for meeting
their own selfish-interests.
Consequently, the very source
providing the food security to the
families of `Sahariyas’ tribe has
been irretrievably damaged.
Left with no alternative, the
people of `Sahariyas’ tribe had
to look out for labour work in
the local stone mines to earn
their livelihood. Slowly and
slowly, they were becoming a
tool of exploitation in the wider
perspective of our social system.
Due to the constant shrinking
of forests and strict provisions
of various forestry laws, the
`Sahariyas’ tribe were left to face
an unending state of hunger.
Respectability, Equality and
Education, as enshrined
in our Constitution, are not
visible in this area and neither
these people have any high
expectations from the Society.
They inhabit clusters of houses
in areas called saharana outside
the main villages. The housing
is generally characterized by
prehistoric standards made up
of stone boulders and roofing
by stone slabs that are locally
called patore.
Traditionally, Sahariyas trace
their beginnings to the days of
the Ramayana and beyond.
They trace their origin from
Shabri of the Ramayan. Some
Sahariya’s claim descent from
Baiju Bheel, a worshiper of the
Hindu god Shiva.
The tribe members believe
in Hinduism’s folk gods and
goddess that they worship and
celebrate in major festivals:
Veer Teja, Dhakar Baba, Durga,
Hanuman, Lalbai, Bejasan,
Savni Amavasya, Janmashtami,
Raksha Bandhan, Deepavali,
Holi and Teja Dashmi.
Saharia, Sahar, Sehariya, or Sahariya is an
indigenous Munda-speaking tribe in the Madhya
Pradesh province of India. The Saharias are mainly
found in the districts of Morena, Sheopur, Bhind,
Gwalior, Datia, Shivpuri, Vidisha and Guna districts
of Madhya Pradesh and Baran district of Rajasthan.

Killing of
Uncle Kamsa
STORY FOR KIDS

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM bad dreams. He saw his
headless body in a mirror,
everything appeared double
and he saw the covering of
the sky as pierced. He saw
holes in his shadow and
left no footprints when he
walked.
Krishna and Balarama came
to the splendorous city of
Mathura along with their
friends. By and by they came
to the wrestling ring and
accepted the challenge to
fight Kamsa’s demons. After
fighting for a few moments,
Krishna and Balarama
easily killed their opponents.
Everyone except Kamsa
rejoiced at the wonderful
defeat.
The evil king stopped the
celebration and shouted:
“Drive the two wicked sons
of Vasudeva out of the city!
Confiscate the cowherds’
property and arrest that evil
man Nanda! Kill that ill-
motivated Vasudeva! Also
kill my father, Ugrasena,
along with his followers,
who have sided with our
enemies.”
Krishna jumped into the
stands, seized Kamsa,
knocked off his crown and
dragged him to the wrestling
mat by his hair. There he
easily killed Kamsa, striking
him with his fist. Kamsa’s
eight younger brothers
attacked Krishna and
Balarama, but Balarama
easily killed them with his
club.
Krishna and Balarama met
their parents, but Devaki and
Vasudeva were struck with
awe, seeing the prophecy
fulfilled and because of a
feeling of reverence, they
were afraid to embrace their
sons. Tears rolled down
their eyes out of joy. At
last they were united with
their children Krishna and
Balaram.
After Krishna killed the arista
(bull) demon, the great
sage Narada Muni went to
Kamsa’s palace and told him
that Krishna and Balarama
were the seventh and eighth
sons of Vasudeva. Narada
described the events that
took place on the night of
Krishna’s birth and confirmed
that Kamsa would meet his
death at Krishna’s hands.
On hearing this news,
Kamsa imprisoned Devaki
and Vasudeva again and
renewed his vow to kill
Krishna. He called for the
Keshi demon, and other
great demons, and just in
case that didn’t work, he
planned to draw the boys
into a wrestling match
with two of his strongest
wrestlers. He sent his
servant Akrura to bring the
boys to Mathura.
Kamsa was delirious with
fear waiting for Krishna to
arrive, and unable to sleep
in the night because of
Kamsa’s demons harassed children throughout
the region for fifteen years. Magically, Krishna
and Balarama killed them all as part of their
divine play, or lila. Thus, the inhabitants of
Vrindavana were thankful, remembering their
guru’s prediction about Krishna.

HEALTHY LIVING

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM Little things
for
Happy Living
The benefits of living a healthy life
are pretty obvious. It makes you stay
physically active and you don’t easily get
sick. If you are healthy and active, you can
do all the things you want to do.
To practice a healthy lifestyle
is about stopping unhealthy
vices like smoking and
drinking alcoholic beverages.
Helpful tips for healthy living
that you can consider include
purifying the air in your own
homes, taking vitamins and
health supplements, and
losing weight if necessary.
When it comes to healthy
eating, nothing can be
healthier than eating
vegetables, fresh fruits
and drinking plenty of pure
water. A healthy eating
habit also means avoiding
heavy dinners, junk foods
and plenty of sweets
and fatty foods. To avoid
taking unhealthy snacks,
it is advisable that you eat
complex carbohydrates,
vegetables and protein-rich
foods during meals. Other
healthy foods that you can
take are nuts like cashews,
almonds, and walnuts.
Drinking a cup of herbal tea
instead of coffee is also a
healthy option.
Having a healthy and safe
environment is also a must
in order to live a healthy
life. You can make your
environment healthy by
knowing the right place
where to put the toxic waste
and chemicals. It is an added
responsibility in taking care
for the wellness and healthy
life of your children aside
from your own physical
health and well-being. Health
care is also a very important
part of living a healthy life.
This covers regular medical
checkups and screenings.
It will help you reduce your
spending on health care if
a health problem is treated
earlier.
Tips for healthy living will
only become effective, if
you religiously follow them
with all your heart. All the
benefits you will get from
these are for your own
good. You are primarily
responsible for your own
life. If you want a healthy
and active life, no one
else can help you achieve
it without you helping
yourself. Your doctor, gym
instructor, family, friends or
neighbors can help you live
a healthy life, but without
your personal desire and
commitment to achieving
it, everything else will fail.
Always put in your mind
that living a healthy life will
lead you to living a happy,
fulfilling and satisfying life.

Much awaited
GST bill

The Goods and Services Tax Bill or GST Bill, officially
known as The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-
Second Amendment) Bill, 2014, proposes a national
Value added Tax is passed by the parliament and is to
be implemented from 1 April 2017.
IN BUSINESS

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM The Goods and Services Tax
(GST), the biggest reform in
India’s indirect tax structure
since the economy began to
be opened up 25 years ago,
at last looks set to become
reality.
Goods and Services Tax”
would be a comprehensive
indirect tax on manufacture,
sale and consumption
of goods and services
throughout India, to
replace taxes levied
by the central and state
governments. Goods
and Services Tax would
be levied and collected
at each stage of sale
or purchase of goods or
services based on the input
tax credit method.
This method allows GST-
registered businesses
to claim tax credit to the
value of GST they paid
on purchase of goods or
services as part of their
normal commercial activity.
Taxable goods and services
are not distinguished
from one another and are
taxed at a single rate in a
supply chain till the goods
or services reach the
consumer.
Administrative responsibility
would generally rest with
a single authority to levy
tax on goods and services.
Exports would be zero-
rated and imports would be
levied the same taxes as
domestic goods and services
adhering to the destination
principle. Amalgamating
several Central and State
taxes into a single tax
would mitigate cascading or
double taxation, facilitating
a common national market.
The simplicity of the tax will
lead to easier administration
and enforcement.
From the consumer point of
view, the biggest advantage
would be in terms of a
reduction in the overall tax
burden on goods, which
is currently estimated at
25%-30%, free movement
of goods from one state to
another without stopping
at state borders for hours
for payment of state tax or
entry tax and reduction in
paperwork to a large extent.
The tax rate under GST may
be nominal or zero rated
for the time being. It has
been proposed to insulate
the revenues of the States
from the impact of GST, with
the expectation that in due
course, GST will be levied
on petroleum and petroleum
products.

Festival of
Brotherhood
RakshabandhanThe festival of brotherhood,
RAKSHABANDHAN celebrated on
18 August 2016.R

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM R
Rakshabandhan is also
called Rakhi Purnima or
simply Rakhi or “Rakhri”,
in many parts of India. The
Hindu festival celebrates
the love and duty between
brothers and sisters.
Rakshabandhan in Sanskrit
literally means “the tie or
knot of protection”. The word
Raksha means protection,
whilst Bandhan is the verb
to tie. Rakshabandhan
is observed in the Hindu
calendar month of Srava and
typically falls in the month of
August every year.
On the morning of Raksha
Bandhan the brothers
and sisters get together,
often wearing new dress
in the presence of parents,
grandparents and other
family members. If the
sister and brother are
geographically separated,
the sister may mail the
Rakhi ahead of the Raksha
Bandhan day. The ritual
typically begins in front of a
lighted lamp (diya) or candle,
which signifies fire deity. The
sister and brother face each
other. The sister ties the
Rakhi on her brother’s wrist.
The brother gives his
sister(s) gifts such as cards,
clothes, money or something
thoughtful. The brother may
also feed his sister, with his
hands, one or more bites of
sweets, dry fruits and other
seasonal delicacies. They
hug, and the larger family
ritually congratulate the
festive celebration of brother-
sister love and protection.
The sister performs a Rakhi
ceremony, then prays to
express her love and her
wish for the well being of her
brother; in return, the brother
ritually pledges to protect and
take care of his sister under
all circumstances. It is one
of the several occasions in
which family ties are affirmed
in India.
There are many interesting
stories associated with
rakshabandhan . The
most common one is
from the Mahabharata,
which acknowledges the
relationship between Lord
Krishna and Draupadi.
According to the epic,
one morning, when Lord
Krishna was flying a kite
he cut his finger with the
thread. Draupadi saw him
bleeding profusely, ran to
him, tore a piece from her
sari and tied it around his
finger. Lord Krishna was so
touched that in return he
promised to protect her from
all evil, forever. And he did
all along, especially during
her ‘cheerharan’ by the
Kauravas.
One of the famous historical
stories involve Emperor
Humayun and Rani Karnavati
of Mewar. When Mewar was
attacked twice by Bahadur
Shah Zafar in the mid 16th
century, she sent a letter
with a rakhi to Humayun as
a last resort, to help her. The
emperor was very touched by
the gesture, and immediately
left the military campaign that
he was then involved in to
protect her.
Another one goes like,
Alexander’s wife, Roxana,
had heard of the festival
of rakhi at the time when
the Greek king was trying
to invade India. To protect
her husband ahead of the
battle, Roxana had sent a
rakhi to King Puru urging
him to “protect” her husband.
Thus, at the time of battle,
when King Puru had the
opportunity to kill Alexander,
he refrained from doing so
because of the vow he had
made to his ‘rakhi sister’.

In 1916, Tilak decided to
build a separate organization
called the ‘Home Rule

His slogan “Swaraj is my

inspired millions of Indians.
Tilak went from village to

RELATIONSHIP
Surviving a Difficult
Relationship

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM Difficult relationships take a lot of energy
and time and can be very disempowering.
But it is possible to resolve these
relationships. Difficult relationships are
painful. Whether it is with your mother,
spouse, child, co-worker or boss, the pain of
separation can be almost unbearable.
Philosopher William James
said, “Whenever you’re in
conflict with someone, there
is one factor that can make
the difference between
damaging your relationship
and deepening it. That factor is
attitude.”
With difficult relationships, the
other person may not ever
change their behavior. You
can become un-attached to
your interpretation of their
behavior and be able to let go
off the pain it is causing you.
Even when you resolve your
relationship in this way, you
may still choose to end the
relationship. It will be easier
for you to end the relationship
if you have first resolved your
feelings toward the person.
It can be a challenge to make
a lasting change, so you might
want the help of a friend or a
coach. It is worth it, because
the ability to resolve these
difficulties empowers you to
move in your life with far less
resistance.
Patience is teh first and
foremost helpful tool which
can help us when we are in
a difficult relationship, we are
already stressed, already on
the edge most of the times. In
situations where he or she is
not giving you time, ignores
your needs, forget your birthday
or an appointment etc. etc.,
one should not crib too much or
create a scene.
Learn to forgive is a beautiful
human emotion, whether in a
difficult relation or not, it is one
of the best tools for peaceful
living, especially so, in a difficult
relation. When the other person
does not come up to your
expectations, whatever the
reason may be, we get angry.
At times, we even become
vindictive.
Loving unconditionally is the
core feeling which binds every
relationship. The all prevailing
powerful emotion of Love helps
us to evolve to the next level in
our quest of evolvement. Love
fully, freely and unconditionally.

There is a wealth of emotional turmoil

When we are depressed, the only person

Many people will say that
they should be really happy

nothing to look forward too.
Just plain sadness can be the
most hurtful feeling on your
journey toward the happiness

and loneliness takes away the
pleasure from your life. If you
find yourself alone at social
events, on weekends, any
kind of anniversary, family

INDIAN TRAVELOGUE
Mathura is a city in the North Indian state of
Uttar Pradesh. It is located approximately 50 km
north of Agra, and 145 km south-east of Delhi,
about 11 kilometers from the town of Vrindavan
and 22 kilometers from Govardhan. It is the
administrative centre of Mathura District of
Uttar Pradesh.
History
According to the
Archeological Survey
of India plaque at the
Mathura Museum, the city is
mentioned in the oldest Indian
epic, the Ramayana. The city
might also have got its name
from a famous Yadav king
Madhu who reigned around
1,600 BC.
In the 6th century BCE
Mathura became the capital of
the Surasena Mahajanapada.
The city was later ruled by
the Maurya Empire (4th to
2nd centuries BC) and the
Sangha dynasty (2nd century
BC). It may have come under
the control of Indo-Greeks
sometime between 180 BC
and 100 BC. It then reverted
to local rule before being
conquered by the Indo-
Scythians during the 1st
century BC. Archaeological

evidence seems to indicate
that, by 100 BC, there was
a group of Jains living in
Mathura.
Mathuran art and culture
reached its zenith under
the Kushan dynasty which
had Mathura as one of their
capitals, the other being
Purushapura (Peshawar). The
dynasty had kings with the
names of Kujula Kadphises,
Kanishka, Huvishka and
Vasudeva. All the Kushans
were patrons of Buddhism
except Vasudeo, mentioned
on coins as Bazodeo.
Kanishka even hosted the
third Buddhist council, the
first two being hosted by
Ajatshatru and Ashoka the
Great. The headless statue
of Kanishka is in the Mathura
Museum.
Megasthenes, writer of
the early 3rd century BC,
mentions Mathura as a
great city under the name
(Methora).
The Indo-Scythians (aka
Sakas or Shakas) conquered
the area of Mathura over
Indian kings around 60 BC.
One of their satraps was
Hagamasha, who was in turn
followed by the Saka Great
Satrap Rajuvula.

Rajuvula apparently eliminated
the last of the Indo-Greek
kings, Strato II, around 10

Sagala.
The Mathura Lion Capital

Sakas. The inscriptions

coins.
Arta is stated to be brother
of King Moga or Maues.
Princess Aiyasi Kambojaka,
also called Kambojika, was
the chief queen of Saka
Maha Kshatrapa Rajuvula.
Kamboja’s presence in
Mathura is also verified from
some verses of the epic,
the Mahabharata, which
are believed to have been
composed around this period.
This may suggest that Sakas
and Kambojas may have
jointly ruled over Mathura and

has reckoned the Sakas of
Mathura among the Kambojas
or else have addressed
them as Yavanas, unless the
Mahabharata verses refer
to the previous period of
invasion and occupation by
the Yavanas around 150 BC.
The Indo-Scythian satraps
of Mathura are sometimes
called the “Northern Satraps”,
as opposed to the “Western
Satraps” ruling in Gujarat
and Malwa. After Rajuvula,
several successors are known
to have ruled as vassals to
the Kushans, such as the
“Great Satrap” Kharapallana
and the “Satrap” Vanaspara,
who are known from an
inscription discovered in
Sarnath, and dated to the 3rd
year of Kanishka (c 130 CE),
in which they were paying
allegiance to the Kushans.
Mathura served as one of
the Kushan Empire’s two
capitals from the first to the
third centuries. The Mathura
Museum has the largest
collection of red stone
sculptures in Asia, depicting
many famous Buddha
figurines.

Fa Xian mentions the city, as
a centre of Buddhism about
A.D. 400; while his successor
Huan Tsang, who visited
the city in 634 AD mentions
as Mot’ulo, and said that it
contained twenty Buddhist
monasteries and five
Brahmanical temples. Later,
he went east to Thanesar,
Jalandhar in the eastern
Punjab, before climbing up to
visit predominantly Theravada
monasteries in the Kulu valley
and turning southward again
to Bairat and then Mathura,
on the Yamuna river.
The city was attacked and
many of its temples destroyed
by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1018
and again by Sikandar Lodhi,
who ruled the Sultanate of
Delhi from 1489 to 1517.
Sikandar Lodhi earned the
epithet of ‘But Shikan’, the
‘Destroyer of Hindu deities’.
The Keshav Dev temple
was partially destroyed
by the Mughal Emperor
Aurangzeb, who built the
city’s Jami Masjid (Friday
mosque), believed to be on
the Kishnajanmabhoomi.
It was won over from the
Mughals by the Jat kings of
Bharatpur but subsequently
the area was passed on to the
Marathas who constructed
a garbh-griha shrine sharing
the wall of mosque. The
garbh-griha mandir is a
small underground temple
which houses black moorti of
Laddu-Gopal. The ambience
of this Kishnajanmabhoomi
mandir has been made to
resemble that of Prison cell.
A noteworthy fact about this
garbh-griha is that the wall
just behind Laddu-Gopal
belongs to Mosque which was
constructed by Aurangzeb
after destroying the ancient
Keshav Dev temple.
The Keshav Dev temple
was built in ancient times
on the site of Lord Krishna’s
legendary birthplace (an
underground prison).
According to the Mahabharata
and Bhagavata Purana epics,
Mathura was the capital of the
Surasena Kingdom, ruled by
Kansa the maternal uncle of
Lord Krishna.
The bigger Lord Krishna
shrine, better known as
Dwarkadeesh temple is a
few metres away from what
is believed to be the actual
birthplace of Lord Krishna, was
built in 1815 by Seth Gokuldas
Parikh, Treasurer of Gwalior.
Legends
In the epic, the Ikshvaku
prince Shatrughna slays a
demon called Lavanasura and
claims the land. Afterwards,
the place came to be known
as Madhuvan as it was thickly

later Mathura. The demon
that Shatrughan killed,
Lavanasura was the progeny
of a devout king Madhu who

a boon in the Puranas. The
Puranas ascribe the founding
of the city to Ayu, the son of

the capital of the Yadavas,
to which Lord Krishna’s
parents Vasudeva and
Devaki belonged. The king
Kansa, Devaki’s brother,
had ascended the throne
by imprisoning his father,
King Ugrasena. Afraid of

Lord Krishna’s life was in

secretly taken out of the
prison cell to be raised by his
foster parents, Yasoda and
Nanda, in Gokul. Two of his
other siblings also survived,
Balaram (Devaki’s seventh

much later than Balaram and
Lord Krishna). Kansa sent
an ogress named Putana to
poison baby Lord Krishna
with her breast milk. She
approached him and suckled
him. Instead of her poisoning
him, he sucked the life out of
her, revealing her true form.
Nanda was the head of a
community of cow-herders,
and he settled in Vrindavan.
The stories of Lord Krishna’s
childhood and youth tell how
he became a cow herder,
his mischievous pranks as
Makhan Chor (butter thief),
his foiling of attempts to
take his life, and his role as
a protector of the people of
Vrindavan.
Lord Krishna is said to
have killed the demons
like Putana, sent by Kansa
for Lord Krishna’s life. He
tamed the serpent Kaliya,
who previously poisoned
the waters of Yamuna River,
thus leading to the death
of the cowherds. In Hindu
art, Lord Krishna is often
depicted dancing on the
multi-hooded Kaliya.
Lord Krishna is said to
have lifted the Govardhan
hill and taught Indra, the
king of the Devas and rain,
a lesson to protect native
people of Vrindavan from
persecution by Indra and
prevent the devastation
of the pasture land of
Govardhan. Indra had too
much pride and was angry
when Lord Krishna advised
the people of Vrindavan to
take care of their animals
and their environment that
provide them with all their
necessities, instead of
worshipping Indra annually
by spending their resources.
The spiritual movement
started by Lord Krishna had
something in it which went
against the orthodox forms
of worship of the Vedic
gods. Lord Krishna lifted
the Govardhan hill and held
it over the people like an
umbrella.
The stories of his play with
the gopis (milkmaids) of
Vrindavan, especially Radha
(daughter of Vrishbhanu,
one of the original residents
of Vrindavan) became
known as the Rasa lila and
were romanticized in the
poetry of Jayadeva, author
of the Gita Govinda. These
became important as part of
the development of the Lord
Krishna bhakti traditions
worshiping Radha Lord
Krishna.
On his return to Mathura as
a young man, Lord Krishna

maternal uncle, Kansa,
after avoiding several
assassination attempts
from Kansa’s followers. He

INDIAN HISTORY
After Alexander went back to Babylon in 324 BC,
Chandragupta overthrew the old Aryan kingdom of
Nanda and formed a big new empire in over all of
northern India and into Afghanistan. Chandragupta

as part of the peace treaty he married the daughter of

a proud and fiery man of the high

thoughtlessly insulted in Court,
was to soon enough cause his
ruin. This was Chanakya, who,
under the pseudonym Kautilya,
later wrote the famous political
book ‘Arthashastra’.
An unforgiving opponent, he
had vowed not to tie his hair in
the customary Brahminical top-
knot until he had avenged his
insult. This didn’t particularly
worry Dhanananda, what could
a single Brahmin do anyway?
He exiled him from Pataliputra
and considered it the end of the
matter.
Travelling in exile through the
Vindya mountains, Chanakya
met Chandragupta Maurya, a
young man who too had deep
personal grudges against the
Nandas. Chandragupta Maurya’s
background is obscure. He was
either the son of a Nanda prince
and a maid-servant called Mura,
or came from the Moriya Tribe of

Chandragupta’s spirited
personality impresssed
Chanakya and he decided
that he would make a
far better King than the
oppressive and debauched

they set about provoking
the people of Magadha
against Dhanananda and as
that happened to be many
amongst the populace that
Dhanananda had offended
in some way, it was not long
before they had managed to
amass a considerable force.
The new Mauryan Army was
still numerically inferior to
that of Dhanananda, but,
under its inspired leaders,
lacked neither in courage
nor persistence. Which
was just as well as success
came only after many severe
setbacks and also apparently
after Chanakya overheard
a mother telling her child to
eat his hot meal from the
sides inwards. Taking hint,
the Mauryan Army stopped
trying to seize Pataliputra
and began attacking first the
outlying regions of Magadha
instead.
The tide turned in their favor.
By 321 B.C. Chandragupta
had succeeded the Nandas
and the long reign of the
Mauryans had begun. The
advent of the Mauryans
brought them into conflict,
next with the Greek General
Seleucus I Nicator, who had
inherited both Alexander’s

Empire-building dreams.
These, Chandragupta
shattered in 303 B.C. The
resulting treaty gave the

victorious Changragupta
the Seleucid Provinces of

Seleucus’s daughter

Water
in Mars
Not yet confirmed
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
has received more than 1.5 terabyte of data from
Mars and continues to remain mum on the Mars
Orbiter Mission’s (MOM) findings on the Red
Planet. US’s Nasa has said that the “seasonal dark
streaks that have become one of the hottest topics
in interplanetary research, don’t hold much water.”
“They do not contradict
last year’s identification of
hydrated salt at these flows,
which since their 2011
discovery have been regarded
as possible markers for the
presence of liquid water
on modern Mars,” a Nasa
statement read.
“We used a very sensitive
technique to quantify the
amount of water associated
with these features,”
Christopher Edwards of
Northern Arizona University,
Flagstaff said in the Nasa
statement, adding that the
results are consistent with no

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM moisture at all and set an
upper limit at three percent
water.
Christopher Edwards, along
with colleagues analysed the
Thermal Emission Imaging
System (THEMIS) data
and says “Our findings are
consistent with the presence
of hydrated salts, because
you can have hydrated salt
without having enough for
the water to start filling pore
spaces between particles.”
“Salts can become hydrated
by pulling water vapor from
the atmosphere, with no
need for an underground
source of the water.”
“Some type of water-related
activity at the uphill end still
might be a factor in triggering
recurring slope lineae (RSL),
but the darkness of the
ground is not associated
with large amounts of water,
either liquid or frozen,”
Edwards said. “Totally dry
mechanisms for explaining
RSL should not be ruled
out.”
ISRO scientists continue to
remain mum on the findings
of Methane Sensor, which
was sent aboard MOM to
detect methane, a possible
indication of life. MOM has
already outlived its expected
life around Mars by nearly
18 months and continues
to send in data. MOM was
launched on November
5, 2013 and entered the
Martian orbit on September
24, 2014. It was expected
to have a life of around six
months ending March 2015,
but has continued to live on,
orbiting the Red Planet.

“The trial represents an
extraordinary opportunity to

said nuTonomy chief

toward deployment of a self-

he said.
The six taxis, Renault Zoe

with a set pick-up and

to be booked through the
company’s smartphone app.
“This is really a moment

change how cities are built,
how we really look at our

executive Doug Parker said.
Doug Parker, nuTonomy’s

A self-realized man has
no purpose to fulfill in the
discharge of his prescribed
duties, nor has he any reason
not to perform such work. Nor
has he any need to depend
on any other living being.
Explanation

person has already passed
the test of achieving atma-
tattva or soul realisation
which is the ultimate goal
of human existence. One
being irrevocably anchored
in spiritual consciousness
without any worldly ego
consciousness has no

attaching themselves. Such
a person has transcended all
injunctions and prohibitions of
the Vedic scriptures.
One situated is atma-tattva
or soul realisation were to
chant the Vedic mantras while
performing yagna or worship,
there would be no greater
or similar happiness other
than the delight one having
communion internally with
their eternal soul.
Lord Krishna declares that
a liberated being in atma-
tattva or soul realisation
need not depend upon any
living being from Brahma,
who was the creator of the
material manifestation down
to an inanimate microbe.
Lord Krishna declares that
the performer of yagna
prospers and flourishes and
the ommiter of yagna fails to
prosper and flourish.
He confirms that in this world
the knower of atma-tattva or
soul realisation has no need
for prosperity or necessity
for performing any action
prescribed in the Vedas, nor
is there any fault or defect
in the ommision of any such
action.
A self-realized man has no purpose to
fullfill in the discharge of his prescribed
duties, nor has he any reason not to

Naga
Panchami
INDIAN EVENTS

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM Nag Panchami is a traditional worship of snakes
or serpents observed by Hindus throughout
India. The worship is offered on the fifth day
of bright half of Lunar month of Shravan (July/
August), according to the Hindu calendar.
The abode of snakes is
believed to be patal lok,
(the seven realms of the
universe located below the
earth) and lowest of them is
called Naga-loka, the region
of the Nagas, as part of
the creation force and their
blessings are sought for the
welfare of the family. Serpent
deity made of silver, stone
or wood or the painting of
snakes on the wall are given
a bath with milk and then
revered.
It is believed that any Puja
offered to snakes would
reach to the serpent Gods.
Hence people worship
live snakes on the day as
representative of serpents
Gods who are revered and
worshipped in Hinduism.
The twelve serpent gods
worshipped during Nag
Panchami Puja are Ananta,
Vasuki, Shesha, Padma,
Kambala, Karkotaka,
Ashvatara, Dhritarashtra,
Shankhapala, Kaliya,
Takshaka and Pingala.
Some people keep fast one
day before Nag Panchami
and fasting day before Nag
Panchami is known as Nag
Chaturthi or Nagul Chavithi.
In Andhra Pradesh Nag
Chaturthi or Nagul Chavithi
is observed just after Diwali
and coincides with six
days long festivity of Soora
Samharam in Tamil Nadu.
According to new moon to
new moon lunar calendar
followed in Gujarat, Nag
Panchami falls during
Krishna Paksha Panchami
of Shravana month. Nag
Panchami is more popularly
known as Nag Pancham
in Gujarat and usually
observed three days before
Krishna Janmashtami
festivities.
The main reason of
celebrating this day must
be that snakes are a great
threat to mankind during
these months. They usually
come out of their holes as
rainwater seeps in and while
looking for shelter they might
harm humans.
One legend says, Krishna
saved the lives of people
from the harassment of
Kaliya, the snake. It is
believed that one day, when
Krishna was still quite young,
was playing by the side of
river Yamuna and his ball
got stuck in the branches of
a tree that was just by the
side of the river. While trying
to get that ball, Krishna fell
into the river. When Kaliya,
the snake attacked him, he
fought and after some time
the snake understood that
he was not an ordinary child.
This was when he pleaded
Krishna not to kill him and
Krishna spared him by taking
a promise that he will not
harass the people anymore.
Nag Panchmi is celebrated
as the victory of Krishna on
Kaliya, the most dangerous
snake.
In Maharashtra, a group
of people asks alms and
clothing by taking a dormant
cobra in a plate and visiting
as many houses as possible.
In Kerala, people visits the
snake temples and worship
the stone or metal icons of
snakes and pray, so that
they and their families are
saved from any snakebite
throughout the year.

Star Gazing
ARIES
The energies in September will be extreme. Either you will be on a high or will hit rock
bottom. Work will be stable with new projects after 9th and 18th. A stuck project will
also pick up lace after 6th. New projects or talks about them will keep you busy. While work
is good. You will still be mentally stressed thinking about the outcome. All I’ll say is, enjoy the
journey. Stop being persistent. Finances will be stable but you will be faced with unexpected
expenses after 15th.
GEMINI
This month just avoid any kind of
friction. One thing will just lead to
another, making you the epicentre
of all the stress and turmoil. Work
will pick up pace after 4th but you might not
enjoy the company of people that you are
working with. Everyone around you will just
test your patience, so you be aware of how
you need to handle this. New projects or
opportunities will come your way after 16th,
but clarity will only come in after 26th.
TAURUS
You won’t know where you are
coming from and where you are
going. You will be blank or lost this
month. Work will be slow till 22nd, which
almost through the month. There could
be slight issues at your workplace around
11th-16th, which might test your patience.
You might also have to be adaptive to new
people at work. Avoid starting a new project
or signing a contract before 14th, as it could
fall apart later.
CANCER
This will be a hectic month but will give
you the results you have been waiting
for. Work will be slow but positive till
the 8th, but after 11th you will not know what
hit you. You will be on a roll, closing deals,
signing contracts or initiating new projects. An
important meeting set up between the 12th and
17th will go in your favour with brilliant results
after the 27th. You might also have to hire new
people or set up a new team suddenly due to
the increase in work. Fame or recognition will
follow post 22nd.
LEO
You could be very harsh on yourself
this month for no reason. You need
to slow down your mental pace.
Work will be stable with new projects coming
in after 12th and 27th September, which
will only manifest in October. Avoid mood
swings with people at work as you could tick
someone off around 17th. Be patient and
focus on one thing at a time. Work is not an
issue here, but the way you handle it can
create issues, so be mature about it.

SEPTEMBER 2016 | WWW.WISHESH.COM SCORPIO
Mixed energies as you enter
September. You will gain some and
lose some. With emotions hitting
the roof, you will have to make a conscious
effort to calm yourself down. Career will be
on a roll with a lot of decisions to be made.
This month, you will be laying the foundation
for something new. It could also mean a new
business, expansion or a new tie up that will
manifest after 9th and 26th.
VIRGO
You are going to have to slow down whether you like it or not. You have been exhausting
yourself beyond capacity and September will be a smooth speed breaker and a much
required one. Career will pick up after 3rd, but will slow down between 15th and 21st. You might
get clarity about a project between 6th and 18th, which will yield results only after 15th. New
opportunities will come through between 4th and 17th, results of which will be seen after 26th.
Avoid friction at work between 11th-19th.
AQUARIUS
This month is all about clarity and
planning the future. Though you like
everything to be perfect, it’s time for
you to be more flexible and start accepting
people and situations just the way they are.
You might lose focus on work till 10th, post
which work will pick up and also give you
results after 19th. You might hire or work with
new people but avoid stress.
LIBRA
You seem to be lost and this
month will give you a sense of new
direction provided you take charge
of situations. Work will be slow till 14th,
especially if you are in a creative field. You
might even face flak for certain impulsive
decisions made in the recent past. Avoid
overreacting. Those who are in area of
commerce will get a promotion or there will be
a sudden change in your responsibilities or
role for the better.
SAGITTARIUS
September will mark a new
beginning for years to come. You
have a lot of ideas and thoughts
that you have been suppressing or avoiding,
that will culminate this month. Work will
be smooth and neutral, but you will begin
to create new ideas after 8th, which will
manifest in reality in October. You just need
to have faith in your vision. Stop seeking
approval.
CAPRICORN
Slow down: this is the only advice I’ll
give you this month. There seems to be
a lot of friction around and you need to
withdraw from it, as you could land up in a real
mess. I don’t mean to scare you, but I’m just
preparing you against the big wave. Work has
been slow since 29th August, and will be slow
till September 17. You might go through friction
with people at work around the 8th-20th.
PISCES
The energies this month will give you
a sense of direction in areas of work
as well as relationship; the trick is
to take the leap at the right time. Work has
kept you disturbed since mid-August and
will continue to till 11th. Clarity about a stuck
deal or project will only come through after
17th, but in all likelihood things might not go
the way you want them to.
