Formatting Text Using the Font Group in
Microsoft Word

Objective:
•Understand and apply various text formatting features available in
the Font Groupof Microsoft Word.
•Participants will gain confidence in using the Font Group to
enhance the appearance of text in their documents effectively.

Steps:
1. Open Microsoft Word
Launch Microsoft Word and create a new document.
Type a sample sentence, e.g., "This is a sample text
for formatting."

2. Select the Text
Highlight the text you want to format using your
mouse or keyboard (Shift + Arrow Keys).

3. Apply Font Formatting (Font Family and Size)
Go to the Font Groupon the Home Tab.
Change the font style:
Click the dropdown arrow in the Fontbox and choose a font
(e.g., Arial, Times New Roman).

3.1 Adjust the font size:
Click the dropdown arrow in the Font Sizebox and
select a size (e.g., 16).
Alternatively, click the Increase Font Sizeor Decrease
Font Sizeicons (A↑and A↓).

4. Change Text Appearance (Bold, Italic, Underline)
While text is still selected:
Click Bto make the text bold.
Click I to italicizethe text.
Click Uto underlinethe text.

5. Apply Text Effects
Select the text.
Click the Text Effects and Typographyicon (a
glowing A).
Choose an effect, such as Outline, Shadow, Reflection,
or Glow.

6. Change Text Color
Click the Font Coloricon (a capital A with a colored
underline).
Select a color from the dropdown menu.
For custom colors:
Click More Colorsand select from the Standardor
Customtab.

7. Highlight Text
Use the Text Highlight Colortool (a marker icon).
Choose a highlight color from the dropdown.
The selected text will now have a background
highlight.

8. Apply Strikethrough or Subscript/Superscript
Select the text:
Click Strikethrough(abc) to draw a line through the text.
Click Subscript(X
₂) to place text slightly below the line.
Click Superscript(X²) to raise text slightly above the line.

9. Use the Clear Formatting Tool
To remove all formatting:
Select the formatted text.
Click Clear All Formatting(an eraser icon with an A).

10.Highlight Text
Use the Text Highlight Colortool (a marker icon).
Choose a highlight color from the dropdown.
The selected text will now have a background
highlight.
