Definition of Work-Related Stress What is work-related stress? Work-related stress is the response people may have when presented with work demands and pressures that are not matched to their knowledge and abilities and which challenge their ability to cope . Job stress can be defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker.
Causes of work-related stress long hours. heavy workload. changes within the organisation . tight deadlines. changes to duties. job insecurity. lack of autonomy. boring work.
Impact on mental health Work-related stress can aggravate an existing mental health problem, making it more difficult to control. If work-related stress reaches a point where it has triggered an existing mental health problem, it becomes hard to separate one from the other.
