WHAT IS pH ? 1. The full form of pH is the potential of hydrogen. 2. pH is the negative logarithm of the H+ ion concentration. pH= -log [H+] 3. It varies between 0 to 14. 4. The solutions having a pH values between 0 to 6.9 are acidic solutions whereas the solution having the pH value between 7.1 to 14 are basic solutions. 5. The solutions having a pH value of 7 are neutral solutions.
A pH meter is a scientific instrument that measures tha hydrogen-ion activity in solutions, indicating its acidic or basic nature. The principle of pH meter is the concentration of hydrogen ion in the solution. WHAT IS pH METER?
pH meter :- whole set pH meter :- parts
PARTS OF pH meter pH meter consists of voltmeter attached to pH-responsive electrode. A MEASURING ELECTRODE :- I t is a tube made up of glass and consists of thin glass bulb welded to it, filled up with potassium chloride solution of known pH of 7. it also contains a block of silver chloride attached to a silver element. it generates the voltage used to measure pH of the unknow solution. A REFERNCE ELECTRODE :- It is a glass tube consiting of a potassium chloride solution in intimate contact with a mercury chloride block at the end of potassium chloride. it is used to provide a stable zero-voltage connection to complete the whole circuit.
DAIGRAM OF pH METER
WORKING OF pH METER 1. pH meter measure the voltage between two electrodes and display the result into corresponding pH value. 2. The glass electrode and refernce electrode or a combination electrode are inserted into the soultion of which pH is to be tested. 3. After immersing electrode in the solution, H+ ions in the test solution exchange for other positively charged ions on the glass bulb. 4. the amplifier detects the differnce in E.P between the two electrodes and converts the P.D to pH unit.
1. A pH meter requireds calibration to give accurate pH reading. 2. Make sure that correct measurement mode is selected before starting the calibration. 3. Wash the electrode with distilled water. do not wipe it. 4. Peform the five points calibration by using standard buffer of pH 1.68, 5, and 7. 5. Press CAL/MEAS key to enter pH calibration mode. the CAL indicator will be shown. PROCEDURE FOR CALIBRATION OF pH METER
APPLICATIONS OF pH METER 1. To measure the pH of biological fluids such as blood, gastric acid and etc. 2. To know the pH of buffer solution. 3. To maintain the pH of reaction condition. 4. To measure the pH of rainwater. 5. To measure the pH of soil, which will helpful in maximizing the yield.
