Warm up: Find and read a current scholarly article in your area. Answer these questions. Turn them in to Kristi. What’s your topic? What’s the journal? Who are the editors? What’s the conversation? Are there any gaps? What the rhetorical situation? What’s the tone and style of the article? Provide examples of scholarly voice from the article. What kind of article is this? What are its parts?

Getting Started: Claim Refers to your position on your topic. It answers “how” and “why.” Your thesis works in service to your claim. Your claim is your overall argument , which is backed by sound reasoning and evidence . Scope & Delimitation Considers the breadth of your paper’s topic. Where does it start? Where does it end? What are its limitations and boundaries? You are not writing a book—so be clear about your paper’s range.
Research question: What are the effects of social media on mental health? Scope: The scope of the study will focus on the impact of social media on the mental health of young adults aged 18-24 in the United States. Delimitation: The study will specifically examine the following aspects of social media: frequency of use, types of social media platforms used, and the impact of social media on self-esteem and body image.
Research question: What are the factors that influence employee job satisfaction in the healthcare industry? Scope: The scope of the study will focus on employee job satisfaction in the healthcare industry in the United States. Delimitation: The study will specifically examine the following factors that influence employee job satisfaction: salary, work-life balance, job security, and opportunities for career growth.
Research Questions Items to Consider: Kairos. Who is the audience? What is the journal? Is this topic of interest to the journal’s readership? What does the literature say? What are the gaps? Has this study/ research been done before? What is missing? Does your topic (& RQs) forward the conversation?
