Work Study Work : Any activity or element being studied . Work is defined as an activity in which a person exerts physical and mental effort to accomplish a given task or perform a duty. The task or duty has some useful objective. It may involve one or more steps in making a product or delivering a service. Work study is an approach which help to explore the work in order to find out a more simpler way of doing the work/task. It is the systematic examination of methods of carrying on activities so as to improve the effective use of resources and to set standards of performance for the activities being carried out . 1

Work Study Answer the two questions: How should a job be done? [Method Study] How much time a job should take for completion? [Work Measurement] 2

Method Study Method study examines the way a task (changing the clutch on a car , preparing a flower bed for planting, cleaning a hotel room) is done. Method study is the systematic recording and critical examination of ways of doing things in order to make improvements. A collection of techniques used to examine work - what is done and how it is done - so that there is systematic analysis of all the elements, factors, resources and relationships affecting the efficiency and effectiveness of the work being studied.

Work Measurement Work measurement is the application of techniques designed to establish the time for a qualified worker to carry out a task at a defined rate of working. This time is called Standard time for the operation. Techniques for WM Stop watch time study Work sampling Synthesis from standard data Pre-determined motion time system

Productivity Productivity is an index that measures output (goods and services) relative to the input (capital, labor, materials, energy, and other resources) used to produce them. It is usually expressed as the ratio of output to input: Output Productivity = --------------- Input

Partial Productivity: - Labor productivity = Units Produced Hours Worked - Material productivity = Output Material - Machine productivity = Output Machine - Capital Productivity = Output/ Capital Input

Production is concerned with the activity of producing goods and services. Productivity is concerned with the efficiency and effectiveness with which these goods and services are produced.

Production improvement does not necessarily mean productivity improvement. Suppose a bank processed 1,000 cheques yesterday, using 20 hours of labor. Let’s say that the same bank processed 1,200 cheques today, using 24 hours. Production has increased by 20%, from 1,000 to 1,200 cheques. However, the labor productivity for this operation is unchanged, because 1,000 / 20 is equal to 50 cheques per hour yesterday, and 1,200 / 24 is equal to 50 cheques per labor hour today. Therefore, improvement in production does not necessarily generate improvement in labor productivity.

Ways to Increase Productivity Through more effective use of resources and human resources. Through technological innovations and developments. Through Capital Investment.
