AP OBLIQUE PROJECTION RPO and LPO positions The articular processes of the lumbar vertebrae form an angle of 30 to 50 degrees, and those between the last lumbar vertebra and the sacrum form an angle of 30 degrees to the midsagittal plane in the majority of patients. However, the angulation varies from patient to patient and from s ide to s ide in the same patient. For compari s on, radiographs are generally obtained from both sides. Zygapophyseal Joints (Lumbar Region) These joints are angled 30°–50° from the midsagittal plane. They open posteriorly and lie oblique to the coronal plane. Best demonstrated on oblique radiographs (patient slightly rotated from anatomical position).
