TRAINING ON ZDHC MRSL & AFIRM RSL

AGENDA What is MRSL? What is RSL? Why should follow MRSL & RSL? MRSL & RSL Tracking Point What are the difference between MRSL & RSL? Updated RSL as per Reputed Buyer. How we can comply with all buyers RSL requirements X Ltd’s RSL Ending

WHAT IS MRSL? MRSL stands for Manufacturing Restricted Substance List, and provides manufacturers, suppliers, brands and retailers with acceptable limits of restricted substances in chemical formulations, which are used in the material and product manufacturing processes. Its Applicable for input materials (Chemical,Water, fabrics/yarn etc) only . Example: ZDHC MRSL v3.1

WHAT IS RSL? RSL stands for Restricted Substances List and is often used as a chemical checklist when testing finished products for the presence of restricted substances. An RSL is applicable to finished articles and/or components. Its applicable for finished products. Example:AFIRM RSL, v- 08, REACH, Reputed buyer’s self RSLs.

WHY SHOULD FOLLOW MRSL & RSL To make safe product To create safe environment To minimize hazard substance To minimize the risk for health and environment. To maintain best supply chain. To increase the reputation To go to green environment.

MRSL & RSL TRACKING POINT

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MRSL & RSL MRSL and RSL are terms used in relation to managing restricted substances during the manufacturing process and finished products respectively. Both are often used as chemical checklists to support product safety and chemical management activities. However, there is often some misunderstanding and confusion between what MRSLs and RSLs are, and when to use them. Whilst both lists include similar chemistries, and both may be used for testing purposes, there are distinct differences between the two.

AFIRM RSL

SCOPE OF AFIRM RSL However, the AFIRM RSL may also be applied to accessories, jewelry, sporting good equipment, wearables, and home textiles. Apparel: Any garment worn on the body intended to protect, cover, or adorn. • Footwear. Any durable covering for the feet intended to protect, cover, or comfort. Accessories: Any product intended to complement apparel, both carried and worn. Jewelry: Small decorative items worn for personal adornment such as rings, necklaces, earrings, pendants, bracelets and cufflinks. Jewelry may be attached to the body or clothing. Sporting Good Equipment: Any product intended for use in sport or exercise, including protective equipment. Wearables: Battery- powered electronic devices intended to be worn on the body during normal use. The AFIRM RSL covers components used on the external portion (i.e. skin contact) of the wearable product. Please note that certain wearable products, such as fitness trackers worn on the wrist, could also be classified as jewelry. AFIRM recommends that suppliers check with their brand customers regarding specific testing requirements for wearable components. Home Textiles: Any product intended for functional or decorative purposes in the home.

SCOPE OF AFIRM RSL For guidance purposes, AFIRM provides examples of products to which the AFIRM RSL may be applied, including but not limited to those listed in Table 1.

ZDHC MRSL

SCOPE OF THE ZDHC MRSL The ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substances List (ZDHC MRSL) is a list of chemical substances banned from intentional use in the processing of textile materials, leather, rubber, foam, adhesives and trims used in textiles, apparel, and footwear industry . Intentional use means the substance used deliberately in a chemical product to achieve a desired look or functionality. The ZDHC MRSL goes beyond the traditional approaches to chemical restrictions, which only apply to finished products ( Restricted Substances List - RSL) and is focused on consumer safety. The MRSL approach also helps protect workers, local communities, and the environment from the possible impacts of harmful chemicals……

CHAPTERS OF THE ZDHC MRSL Chapter- 1: ZDHC MRSL Chapter- 2: ZDHC MRSL Candidate List Chapter 3: ZDHC MRSL Archived Substances

CHAPTER- 1: ZDHC MRSL This applies to chemical formulations and substances used during the creation and wet processing of textile fibres, and during the creation and processing of (coated) fabrics, leather, rubber, foam and adhesives. The MRSL substances are listed with applicable CAS numbers and provided with Applicability filters for substrates (Textile, Leather, Polymers - Rubber, Foam, Adhesives), Supplier Guidance, Formulation Limit and Methods of Analysis. Note: ZDHC MRS (1A- 1S)

CHAPTER- 2: ZDHC MRSL CANDIDATE LIST Substances proposed for addition to the ZDHC MRSL update, as described in the Principles and Procedures, as they lack safer alternatives at scale or more information on the same needs to be collected. Substances on the Candidate List encourages the innovation of alternatives. Note: ZDHC MRS Candidate List (2A- 2G)

CHAPTER- 3: ZDHC MRSL ARCHIVED SUBSTANCES Substances without strong evidence of current use in Industry, but with clear evidence of historical use. The Archived Substances should not be reintroduced by a chemical manufacturer in their commercial chemical products. This list should be reviewed by ZDHC Approved MRSL Certifier through the chemical product’s Safety Data Sheet or any other relevant document to confirm absence of these substances in the chemical formulation that is being certified for ZDHC MRSL Conformance. Note: ZDHC MRS Archived Substance (3A- 3D)
