Determine the substances being tested are acid, alkali or neutral using natural source as a PH indicator Problem
Aim/objective To make own pH indicator paper using red cabbage, and use it to measure the acidity and alkalinity of various solution from household chemicals available in the market
Red cabbage extract can indicate whether a substance is an acid or alkaline. Hypothesis
Apparatus
Variables Fixed Variables Red cabbage pH paper Manipulated Variables Acidic and Alkaline solutions Responding Variables pH values
Procedures 1.Prepare a red cabbage indicator solution as follows a. Slice a head of the cabbage at approximately 3cm (1 inch) intervals, or peel the leaves from the head and tear them into pieces.
b.Place the leaves in the cooking pot and cover with water. c.Cook on medium heat for half an hour(low boil is good)
d. Allow the cooked cabbage to cool, and then pour off the liquid into a bowl. You can pour through a strainer to catch the cabbage pieces or hold them back with a large, flat ladle with holes. e. The solution is deep blue, but will change color when the pH changes.(We can experiment with using the liquid as a pH indicator.)
2. Here`s how to make the pH paper using the red cabbage solution and coffee filters Soak the white coffee filter in the red cabbage solution for about 30 minutes
Drain the excess solution from the filter, and set them out in a single layer on some paper towels to dry overnight. To speed up the drying process, you can put them under sunlight.
When the coffee filters are dry, cut them into 3 cm x 8cm (about 1 inch x 3 inches) strips. The strips are now ready to test the pH of various solutions. They start out blue, but will turn green in basic solution and red in acidic solutions.

Observation Some of the most important kinds of chemicals in science are acids and bases. Although we may not realize it, we use acids and bases in our home every day. One way to test if a substance is an acid base is to test its pH. pH is the scale used in science to rate acids and bases. An easy way to do this is to use pH paper, which is a piece of paper with a chemical on it that will change colors if it is mixed with acids or bases
Some fruits and vegetables contain this special type of chemical. Example : red cabbage Observation of pH values Colour Pink Dark Red Violet Blue Blue - Green Green-Yellow Approx pH 1-2 3-4 5-7 8 9-10 11-12 Acid/Base Acid Acid Acid/ Neutral Base Base Base
Safety Precautions This activity requires the use of sharp cutting utensils. Use caution when handling knives or a blender. Ask an adult to help you if necessary. Always use household chemicals with adult supervision.
NEVER mix household cleaning products together. This may cause dangerous reaction . Always test each substance separately. Do not eat or drink any of the substances after you have tested them.
Life Examples Fertilizers soaps and detergents
