INTRODUCTION Employees' State Insurance Corporation (abbreviated as ESIC) is a  statutory body  under the  ownership  of  Ministry of Labour and Employment ,  Government of India . The fund is managed by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) according to rules and regulations stipulated in the ESI Act 1948. HISTORY In March 1943, Prof. B.P. Adarkar was appointed by the Government of India to create a report on the health insurance scheme for industrial workers. The report became the basis for the Employment State Insurance (ESI) Act of 1948.

NEW AMENDMENTS The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) raised the monthly wage limit to Rs. 21,000 from the existing Rs. 15,000, for coverage with effect from 1 January 2017. The rate of contribution was reduced from 6.5% to 4% ( employer's share 3.25% and employee's share 0.75%) effective from 1 July 2019.

Covers all state & UTS EXCEPT-Manipur, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Delhi & Chandigarh now notified 668 Districts in 36 States and Union Territories The Scheme is yet to be notified in 135 districts.

2. Sickness benefit Sickness is certified by Insurance Medical Officer 91 days 70% daily wage Extended sickness benefit:- Benefit extended for 2 years 80% wages Person is eligible if:- employment is continuous for-2 years

Psychosis-Schizophrenia 10. Others- Burger's disease. Enhanced sickness benefit :- full average daily wage for duration up to 7 days in case of vasectomy & upto 14 days in the case of tubectomy

3. Maternity benefit Maternity Benefit is payable for a maximum period of 26 weeks up to 2 surviving children in case of confinement of which not more than 8 weeks shall precede the expected date of confinement, The insured woman having two or more than two surviving children shall be entitled to receive maternity benefits during a period of 12 weeks of which is not more than six weeks shall precede the expected date of confinement. The commissioning mother or adopting mother shall be entitled to 12 weeks of maternity benefit from the date the child is handed over. -A commencing mother who wishes to have a child with surrogacy -A woman who legally adopts a child upto 3 months of age

Miscarriage or Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP)-payable for 6 weeks (42 days) from the date following miscarriage. Sickness arising out of Pregnancy, Confinement, Premature birth-payable for a period not exceeding one month In the event of the death of the Insured Woman during confinement leaving behind a child, Maternity Benefit is payable to her nominee Maternity benefit rate is 100% of average daily wages.

4. Disablement benefit The act provides for cash payments , beside for free medical treatment in the events of temporary and permanent disabled as a results of employment injury as well as occupational disease. Temporary disablement 90% wages till recovery Permanent disablement 90% wages Lifetime pension

5. Dependent benefit Death as a result of employment injury Dependents get pensions at rate of 90 % of wages Son or daughter is entitled to get benefit up to age of 18 years (benefits is withdrawn If daughter gets married)

6. Funeral expenses Funeral benefits is a cash payments payable on the death of an insured person towards the expansion of his funeral. Funeral expenses Cash not exceeding Rs. 15000

7. Rehabilitation On monthly payment of Rs 10 to insured person & his family members continue to get medical treatment after permanent disablement

MEDICAL AND DENTAL COLLEGE There are 8 Medical Colleges managed by the  Ministry of Labour and Employment (India)  under the ESI Corporation. They are : ESIC Medical College and PGIMSR, [10]   K. K. Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana :

This scheme of Unemployment allowance w.e.f. 01-04-2005. An Insured Person who become unemployed after being insured two or more years, due to closure of factory/establishment, retrenchment or permanent invalidity not less than 40% arising out of non-employment injury are entitled to :- Unemployment Allowance equal to 50% of wage for a maximum period of upto 2 Years during the life time. Medical care for self and family from ESI Hospitals/Dispensaries during the period IP receives unemployment allowance. Vocational Training provided for upgrading skills - Expenditure on fee/travelling allowance borne by ESIC.

Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana (ABVKY)

Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana (ABVKY) This scheme is a welfare measure for employees covered under Section 2(9) of ESI Act, 1948, in the form of relief payment upto 90 days, once in a lifetime. w.e.f. 01-07-2018 on pilot basis for a period of two years initially. It has also been decided to enhance the rate of unemployment relief under the scheme to 50% of wages from earlier rate of 25% along with relaxation in eligibility conditions

Incentive to employers in the Private Sector for providing regular employment to the persons with disability : Minimum wage limit for Physically Disabled Persons for availing ESIC Benefits is 25,000/-. Employers' contribution is paid by the Central Government for 3 years.

Benefits & Contributory Conditions : For ESIC Scheme An interesting feature of the ESI Scheme is that the contributions are related to the paying capacity as a fixed percentage of the workers wages, whereas, they are provided social security benefits according to individual needs without distinction. Cash Benefits are disbursed by the Corporation through its Branch Offices (BOs) / Pay Offices (POs), subject to certain contributory conditions.
