Britain and France fought over land in the Ohio Valley. George Washington played a role in early battles. The war cost Britain a lot of money, leading to new taxes.
Colonists were told not to move west of the Appalachian Mountains. Many ignored this rule and moved west anyway. Led to increased smuggling and defiance of British authority.
Sugar Act (1764): Taxed sugar and molasses to raise money. Stamp Act (1765): Taxed paper goods like newspapers and licenses. Townshend Acts (1767): Taxed imported goods like tea. Colonists protested, saying, “No taxation without representation!”
In 1770, British soldiers killed 5 colonists during a protest. This event was used to unite colonists against Britain.
In 1773, colonists dumped tea into Boston Harbor to protest the Tea Act. This act of rebellion angered the British government.

In 1774, colonists met to discuss problems with Britain. Issued the Declaration of Rights and Grievances. They stopped trade with Britain and prepared for defense.
Another meeting in 1775 assumed the powers of a national government. George Washington appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Issued the Olive Branch Petition, a final attempt to reconcile with Britain.
