JOHARI WINDOW

INTRODUCTION SELF arises out of self-appraisal & the appraisal of others & represents each individual’s unique pattern of values, attitude, beliefs, behavior, emotions & needs. Self-awareness is the recognition of these aspects & understanding about their impact on the self & others. The Johari Window is a representation of the self & a tool that can be used to increase self-awareness.

Known to self Unknown to self Known to others Unknown to others OPEN OR PUBLIC SELF UNKNOWING SELF PRIVATE SELF UNKNOWN SELF

1 st Quadrant The OPEN or PUBLIC self The upper left quadrant of the window represents the part of the self that is public; that is, aspect of the self about which both the individual & others are aware.

Examples: Ram, a bank employee who is the adult child of an alcoholic, has strong feelings about helping alcoholics to achieve sobriety. H e volunteers his time to be a support person on call to help recovering alcoholics. He is aware of his feelings & his desire to help others. Members of the Alcoholics Anonymous group in which h e volunteers his time are also aware of Ram’s feelings & they feel comfortable calling him when they need help refraining from drinking.

2 nd Quadrant The UNKNOWING self The upper right (blind) quadrant of the window represents the part of the self that is known to others but remains hidden from the awareness of the individual.

When Ram takes care of patients in detox, he does so without emotion, tending to the technical aspects of the task in a way that the clients perceive as cold & judgmental. H e is unaware that he comes across to the clients in this way.

3rd Quadrant The PRIVATE self The lower left quadrant of the window represents the part of the self that is known to the individual, but which the individual deliberately & consciously conceals from others.

Ram would prefer not to take care of the client in detox because doing so provokes painful memories from his childhood. Because he does not want the other staff members to know about these feelings, however, he volunteers to take care of the detox client whenever they are assigned to his unit.

4th Quadrant The UNKNOWN self The lower right quadrant of the window represent the part of the self that is unknown to both the individual & to others.

Ram felt very powerless as a child growing up with an alcoholic father. He seldom knew in what condition he would find his father or what his behaviour would be. H e learned over his life situation, & left home as soon as he graduated from college. The need to stay in control has always been very important to Ram , & he is unaware that working with recovering alcoholics helps to fulfill this need in him. The people he is helping are also unaware that Ram is satisfying an unfulfilled personal need as he provides them with assistance.

CONCLUSION The goal of increasing self-awareness is to increase the size of the quadrant that represents the OPEN OR PUBLIC SELF. The individual who is open to self & others has the ABILITY TO BE SPONTANEOUS & TO SHARE EMOTIONS & EXPERIENCES WITH OTHERS. This individual also has a GREATER UNDERSTANDING of personal behaviour & of others’ responses to him or her. Increased self-awareness allow an individual to INTERACT WITH OTHERS COMFORTABLY, to accept the differences in others, & to observe each person’s right to respect & dignity.
