From 1702 the founder began to endure a long period of trial, aggravated by persecution on the part of certain ecclesiastical authorities .. In 1703 one of his most trusted disciples, Nicolas Vuyart, treacherously deserted him. After choosing Bro. Bartolomew as his successor, John spent the remaining of his days in self-effacement, mental prayers, obedience and mortification. He died in Rouen on Good Friday, April 7, 1719.
