Comprensión y Producción de Textos en Inglés I Prof. Esp. Carolina GARCIA RIVAS [email protected]

TEXTS Social processes that unfold . Likewise , culture unfolds in different situations . There are sequences of meanings to be interpreted in this unfolding .

OUR FRAMEWORK:

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is a theory of language that is strongly oriented to the description of how language makes meaning in context . Halliday1978;1994;1996; Halliday and Hasan 1985; Halliday and Matthiessen 1999;2004

Why S.F.L.? It is concerned with the SEMANTICS OF DISCOURSE .

Two general perspectives : 3 levels of language 3 functions of language in social contexts Systemic Functional Linguistics

3 LEVELS OF LANGUAGE:

3 FUNCTIONS OF LANGUAGE:

INTERWOVEN LANGUAGE FUNCTIONS

What does semantics - discourse analysis do? It takes the tools of grammarians to identify the role of wording in texts . It employs the tools of social theorists to explain why they make the meanings they do. Semantic discourse is the interface between grammar and context .

It’s all in the GENRE Different types of text enact different social activity in different social contexts . Genres display consistent patterns of meaning as speakers interact in different social situations .

The consistency of patterns makes it easier to predict how each situation is going to unfold, thus how speakers are expected to interact.

Examples of genre : service encounters casual conversations telephone enquieries instructions lectures plays jokes debates, etc

Thanks for staying until the end!!
