ISC MATHEMATICS 2020 - 21

“Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.” ~Oscar Wilde

COMMON ERRORS OBSERVED

RELATIONS AND FUNCTIONS Identification of Identity element Proving of equivalence relation

INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS Learning of formulae and their applications Use of principal values

MATRICES AND DETERMINANTS Reading of question is very important. Finding the adjoint using cofactors correctly and multiplication of inverse matrix in solving system of equations. Correct determinant value of the matrix in finding the inverse of a matrix.

CONTINUITY and DIFFERENTIABILITY Use of chain rule while differentiation of a function. Finding the second derivative in parametric functions Differentiation of a function with respect to another function

APPLICATIONS OF DERIVATIVES Maxima and Minima – Second order derivative DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS While solving questions, constant of integration must be written to avoid wrong cancellation and calculations.

PROBABILITY Read and interpret the question carefully. Instructions of the question and steps of calculations must be written and followed to score marks.

VECTORS Children at times ignore the diagram which is a support to the solution. They must draw the diagram with proper directional arrows and use proper symbols for dot and cross product wherever required.

APPLICATIONS OF INTEGRALS In Area questions, sketching of curves is must. Council keeps marks for the sketching part, not doing so leads to deduction of marks.

LINEAR REGRESSION Use of coefficient of determination i.e. r 2 Usage of correct formulae for regression coefficients and finding the correct regression lines.

LINEAR PROGRAMMING Shading of correct feasible region is must. Answering of value in value based question carries one mark.

“Success does not consist in never making mistakes but in never making the same one a second time.” ~ George Bernard Shaw

HOW TO SCORE 100% MARKS “The beginning is always the hardest. Life rewards those who work hard at it.” DO NOT GIVE UP.

Pattern of the Question Paper There will be two papers: * Paper 1: Theory (3 hours) – 80 marks * Paper 2: Project Work – 20 marks

PATTERN OF THEORY QUESTION PAPER SECTION A SECTION B SECTION C OR Compulsory for all the students (65 marks) Optional (15 marks) Optional (15 marks)

Section A - Students will be required to attempt all questions. Internal choice will be provided in two questions of 2 marks each, in two questions of 4 marks each and in two questions of 6 marks each . Section B or Section C - Students will be required to attempt all questions Either from Section B or Section C . Internal choice will be provided in one question of 2 marks and one question of 4 marks each .

Topic wise allocation of marks (as per the Council specimen paper) SECTION A Relations and Functions (Relations and Functions + Inverse Trigonometric Functions) – 10 marks Algebra (Matrices + Determinants) – 10 marks Calculus (Continuity and Differentiability + Applications of Derivatives + Indeterminate Forms + Integrals + Differential Equations) – 32 marks Probability – 13 marks

SECTION B Vectors – 5 marks Three Dimensional Geometry – 6 marks Applications of Integrals – 4 marks

SECTION C Application of Calculus – 5 marks Linear Regression – 6 marks Linear Programming – 4 marks

Covid Edits:- Due to the covid-19 pandemic, Council has reduced the syllabus. So ,kindly refer to the further reduced syllabus for the board examination 2020-21

POINTS TO REMEMBER Utilization of reading time to choose the questions that you want to attempt Utilization of writing time by allocating the appropriate time for answering each question Focusing on the key words in the Question Paper Answer the questions to the point only.

Whenever internal choices are given, make the choice wisely. Start from EASY TO DIFFICULT . Copying the wrong question from the Question Paper leads to loss of marks. Children do mistake in copying a step below the other at times, which leads to the wrong result and loss of marks.

PRE-EXAMINATION TIPS Try not to mug up the formulae; instead try to attempt a good number of questions based on them and they will be memorized automatically. Try solving all the available questions on all the topics covered in the syllabus. There isn’t any shortcut to success. (Remember this)

One of the most important thing is ‘ Time Management ’. Try solving mock papers at home within the time limit; it will help you cope up with the speed. Make a sheet of important concepts / formulae and paste it near your study table for continuous revision.

EXAMINATION DAY TIPS Reach the examination centre at least half an hour before the exam to make yourself comfortable with the environment. Completely utilize the first 15 minutes of your reading time in reading the question paper thoroughly. Read the instructions very carefully and also select the questions with internal choices, that you want to attempt or which you feel you can answer easily.

Avoid overwriting and write neatly keeping proper margins. Rough work should be done adjacent to the solution. Never strike off the answers . If you attempt an answer 3 times, the part in which you get the maximum marks will be considered. Try to attempt all the questions as there is no negative marking. In case there is misprint in a question or you think the question is wrong, you should try to attempt it as you will get full marks only if you do so.

TIME MANAGEMENT Total time to answer the questions is 120 to 146 minutes. TYPE OF QUESTIONS MARKS NO. OF QUESTIONS TOTAL MARKS RECOMMENDED MAX. TIME LIMIT TOTAL TIME LIMIT VERY LONG ANSWER 6 4 24 9 to 10 min each 36 to 40 min LONG ANSWER 4 6 24 6 to 7 min each 36 to 42 min SHORT ANSWER 2 5 (A) + 1 (B or C) 12 3 to 4 min each 18 to 24 min VERY SHORT ANSWER 1 15 (A) +5 (B or C) 20 1.5 to 2 min each 30 to 40 min

“I am in competition with no one. I have no desire to play the game of being better than anyone. I am simply trying to be better than the person I was yesterday.”

All the very best for the forthcoming examinations THANK YOU
