Multiculturalism
It is the acceptance or promotion of multiple ethnic cultures in a
specific place.
Liberal multiculturalism assumes the existence of pre-existing cultures,
which relate to, and interact with, each other, but doesn’t examine the
hierarchies of power based in these interactions.
Critical multiculturalism is concerned with the institutions and practices
forming the whole society. It sees inequalities of power and racism,
recognizing the rights.
Around the World
• It is a more and more common phenomenon and it exists in all the
countries.
• The most multicultural countries are:
the USA
Canada
the UK
Australia
• Theoretically, it is accepted in most of the countries; however, this doesn’t
happen in practice.
In Europe
Multiculturalism also exists in the European countries; however, in some of
them this is not well accepted, such as:
in France
in Germany
The European Union is concerned with this subject and is trying to solve
this problem, by making laws and promoting the tolerance;
This project, for example, aims at the communication among different
cultures which is a way to fight against the ethnic discrimination.
In Portugal
o There is a huge contrast between the old generation and the youngest one.
Old people don’t accept this phenomenon very well;
Young people easily join to this kind of interaction.
o There is a great number of different ethnicities in Portugal, among them
Chinese, gipsies, Ukrainians and people from the former Portuguese
colonies, like Angola, Cape Verde, among others.
In Portugal
o Unfortunately, these immigrants aren't well integrated in our society,
because most of them still live in slums or in not so pleasant neighbourhoods
in the suburbs of the cities.
o ACIME is a non-governmental organization that helps in the integration of
these immigrants and protects their rights.
In Castelo de Paiva
Here there is a great acceptance of multiculturalism;
The main ethnicities are Chinese, gipsies and Moroccans.
A fact that proves our acceptance and respect towards other ethnicities
and cultures is this project meeting and the spontaneous acceptance of our
families of this project.
