Types of Nonverbal Communication Kinesics Vocalics or paralanguage Personal appearance or Artifacts Proxemics or personal space Haptics or touch
Kinesics : Facial Expressions These usually convey emotions. Facial expressions reflect emotion, feelings and attitudes . There are 6 Universal emotions: Surprise Fear Sadness Anger Happiness Disgust
Kinesics: Eyes (communication through eyes) “The eyes are the window to the soul” Eye contact show interest, attention or respect/disrespect Meanings of Eye contact varies across culture to culture. Eye contact signals confidence and/or interest in the West, but can be seen as rude or challenging in parts of Asia and the Middle East. There are gender rules around eye contact, with many cultures discouraging women from making eye contact with men as it conveys authority.

Proxemics: Inter-personal Space (The Bubble) It is the space you place between yourself and others. This invisible boundary becomes apparent only when someone bumps or tries to enter your bubble . Personal space is the region surrounding a person which they regard as psychologically theirs . Personal space is highly variable , and can be due to cultural differences and personal experiences . For example , those living in a densely populated places tend to have a lower expectation of personal space.
Intimate zone – partners & family Personal zone – friends and group discussions (about an arm’s length) Social zone – acquaintances and new groups Public zone – unknown people and large audiences Zones of the Bubble:
Haptics or Touch Touch can be used to communicate affection, familiarity, sympathy, and other emotions . Gender differences also play a role in how people utilize touch to communicate meaning. Women tend to use touch to convey care, concern, and nurturance. Men, on the other hand, are more likely to use touch to assert power or control over others .
Appearance or Artifacts Our choice of clothing, hairstyle, and other appearance factors are also considered a means of nonverbal communication . Research on color psychology has demonstrated that different colors can evoke different moods. Appearance can also alter physiological reactions, judgments, and interpretations . Objects and images are also tools that can be used to communicate nonverbally . A police officer will wear a specific uniform, and a doctor will wear a white lab coat. At a mere glance, these outfits tell others what that person does for a living. That makes them a powerful form of nonverbal communication.
Vocalics or Paralanguage Paralanguage includes the non-language elements of speech, such as your talking speed , pitch , intonation , volume and more . Example : You might speak quickly if you are excited about something . Paralanguage refers to communication that is vocalized but not words . It is the key to understanding the context or meaning of the words used .
