The prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs in Al- qudaimi school Aljeraf-sana’a city 2024 Dental assistant Supervised by DR: Mohammed Alsafadi Modern specialized collage for medical & technical sciences

Introduction Malocclusion of the teeth is not really a disease in the way that dental caries and periodontitis are, it is more a reflection of the natural variation that occurs in any biological system. Malocclusion or “bad bites” is one of the most common dental problems. When you have malocclusion, your upper and lower teeth don’t align when you close your mouth. Malocclusion typically happens when your teeth are crowded — meaning your teeth are too large for your mouth — or are crooked and it also happen when there are so much spaces between your teeth. Left untreated, malocclusion can cause several health problems. Apart from causing dental problems such as decayed teeth, losing teeth or developing gum disease. The prevalence of malocclusion varies from one region to another and among different ethnic groups, age- groups, and gender groups.

The figure shows the difference between normal and abnormal occlusion relationship

Justification Little is known about prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs in school children in Yemen. • No previous study has been done at Aljeraf schools in Sana’a. • Malocclusion among children can be corrected by ort hodontic treatment.

Objectives of study To estimate prevalence of malocclusion between secondary school ’s children in ALqudaimi School - Aljeraf- Sana'a city Yemen. To Measure the extent of malocclusion in teeth in general. To Measure the extent of malocclusion in children with 15 to19 years per time. To Evaluate the condition of the occlusion and arches in children.

Research problem What are the causes of malocclusio n? What are the different types of malocclusions? What are the potential health ramifications of malocclusion? How is malocclusion diagnosed ? What are the methods of treating malocclusion and does it depend on the age of the person?

Research hypothesis The causes of malocclusion are varied and include genetic factors, problems with the growth of the jaws , bad habits such as chomping nails that are too lo ng, thump sucking, and p remature tooth loss . There are different types of malocclusions including overbite, underbite , crossbite , and incorrect calcification. Malocclusion may lead to difficulty chewing and digesting, difficulty speaking, jaw pain and tension, poor tooth protection, and breathing problems. To diagnose malocclusion, the dentist performs a comprehensive examination of the jaws and teeth, including the patient's medical history and evaluation of X-rays and photographs. Treatment methods for malocclusion include orthotics, therapeutic braces, and dentures. Treatment depends on the severity of the malocclusion condition and age.

Methodology and data collection Among school's children in Al qudaimi school in Aljeraf Sana'a, Yemen, this cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to determine the rate of malocclusion. From the selected school, the research sample was a total of 255 female students aged 15-19 years were selected and screened out of the whole research community which was 549 students. The criteria factors for every malocclusion measurement described by Angle classification were divided malocclusion into various groups that were recognized on the occlusal relations of the first molar. Using the standard method, data were collected by the students if the research. With a simple examination under sufficient light.

Results General Results : As a result of studying the sample according to those who suffer from malocclusion and those who don’t suffer, we concluded that the female students who suffer from malocclusion are greater in proportion and the number of female students who suffer is about (54.1%) and (138) students out of (255) students. Conclusion This result underscores the significance of raising awareness regarding this dilemma and the requirement to focus further efforts towards prevention of all interference to maintain dental health, thus recovering chewing functions and aesthetics for individuals and the entire population.

Recommendation This study was conducted on female students only in one school so we recommend other students to make researches on males and females and in another schools in the area.
