No job is so important or urgent that it cannot be done in a safe way. Escalator & Moving walks 1 0 Absolutes for OSH ALWAYS follow lock and tag out procedure when power supply is not required to perform the work. ALWAYS verify the proper functioning of the emergency stop switch prior to entering the machine room or the pit. ALWAYS use Inspection Mode and the Maintenance Control Unit [MCU] for inspection and maintenance. Keep a clear view of the risk area while using the MCU. NEVER run the escalator in normal mode with missing or damaged steps. ALWAYS secure the step chain from movement with two independent means whenever work is performed within the range of the step band. ALWAYS check that Jumpers (or any other means used to temporarily bridge a safety device) have been removed before starting in normal operation. Strictly limit the use of jumpers (and disabling safety sensors) to inevitable tasks. ALWAYS place effective barriers at both ends of the unit during work. Barricade and block the unit electrically and mechanically, if leaving it unattended with steps or pallets removed. NEVER ride on the unit with steps/pallets removed. NEVER attempt to jump over a gap in the step band . NEVER walk on step axles. ALWAYS face towards any gap in the step band while working in proximity to it. ALWAYS use appropriate PPE including fall protection whenever a fall hazard exists. NEVER work or position body parts in the range of unguarded moving parts or exposed, live electrical circuits. NEVER work on electrical parts under wet conditions. ALWAYS use certified, load-rated tools & equipment for lifting. Inspect rigging equipment before every use. Ensure hooking points are of adequate load-bearing capacity.
