Introduction Home visiting is very essential to the community health services. Majority of the patients are found in the home. Home is the place of service where nursing practice is self-directed, and knowledge, skills and experiences of the nurses are engaged. Visiting patient in the home provides a challenge and an opportunity for both the nurse and family to function as a team in their own environment.
Definition Home visiting is a strategy for comprehensive service delivery utilizing professionals, highly trained paraprofessionals or volunteers to offer support to children and their families primarily in their own homes for the purpose of ensuring that; all babies are born healthy, all children are raised in safe and nurturing families and all children enter school ready to learn.
Principles of Home Visit Home visit is the process of providing nursing care to patient at their doorsteps. The goal of home visit is to provide appropriate nursing care leading to wellness of the patients. When carrying out home visits, the community health nurse should follow certain basic principles:
Principles of Home Visit Home visits should be planned with purpose and should be beneficial to patient. H ome visit should must have a clear purpose that should meet the needs of patients. It should include surveys and statistics, MCH services, home nursing in cases of illness, including health teaching. Home visits should be regular & flexible according to the needs of patients. Home visits should be educative, i.e. it gives excellent opportunities for health education.
Principles of Home Visit Home visit should give opportunities for nurse to demonstrate hygienic principles Home visit should be convenient, attempt to include each family member while using nursing process. The nurse should make an attempt to include each family member while using nursing process. The nurse and the family must develop positive interpersonal relationship in their work to achieve the goal.
Principles of Home Visit The nurse must be flexible and must respect the patients’ rights to accept or reject care and to participate in goal-setting and goal-achievement. Home visits should be recorded in the dairy and family folder.

Purposes of Home Visiting Engaging in a process of collaborative partnership building between staff and families. Establishing mutual trust and to identify family strengths, capacities, needs, goals, and necessary services to support progress. Reviewing the progress of the child’s development, education services, health screening and results.
Purposes of Home Visiting Connect families with health resources within their community, and provide resources and referrals during times of emergency and crisis situations. The partnership that develops between staff and families should include other agencies that also provide services and support to the family in an effort to avoid any duplication of efforts.
Advantages Provides an excellent opportunity to implement the nursing process. Provide an opportunity to study the home and family situation. Provide an opportunity to render services to the family members at their own surroundings. Create a good understanding between nurse and family and builds good image of nurses. Clarify the doubts raised by the family members.
Advantages Help to observe family practices and progress of care given by nurses and others. Prevent and handling problems. Help the nurses and family members to modify the ways of their care. Convenient for the patients. Facilitate patient best option for patient unwilling or unable to travel. Provide natural environment for the discussion of concerns and needs.

Phases of Home Visits Initiation phase : CHN informs the family about the purpose of visiting after giving introduction of herself & also obtain information about the family members.
2. Maintenance phase CHN maintain the family history for which nurses use their talent for making themselves acceptable to family members. Nurses provide services & solve their problems & helping them in crisis.
3. Termination phase After providing care to the family , terminate the visit. Always record the visit Evaluate whether planned objectives were achieved or not.
