HOW LAYERS OF ROCKS (STRATIFIED ROCKS) ARE FORMED
Rocks especially sedimentary rocks contain a lot of information about Earth’s past. It holds the key to most of the geologic processes that happened on Earth.
It is also the key to uncovering how life on Earth evolved . Geologists reconstruct the sequence of events from the study of petrology, stratigraphy , and paleontology.
Petrology- is a branch of geology that deals with the origin, composition, structure, and classification of rocks. Stratigraphy - is the study of rock layers (strata) and layering (stratifications).
Paleontology- studies the life that existed prior to, or sometimes at the start of, the Holocene epoch (the current geologic epoch)
Based on the information gathered from the study of rock composition and structure, rock layers, and fossils, geologist developed the geologic time scale.

STRATIFICATION Stratification- the layering that occurs in most sedimentary rocks and in those igneous rocks formed at the Earth’s surface as from lava flows and volcanic fragmental deposits. .
STRATIFICATION - The layers range from several millimeters to many meters in thickness and vary greatly in shape
Sedimentary rocks have the general characters of occurring in the form series of beds. This phenomenon is known as “Stratification” or “Bedding”
Common Structure and Texture of Sedimentary Rocks When the thickness of individual beds is very small it is called “lamination”.
Common Structure and Texture of Sedimentary Rocks This is an inherent, primary character of sedimentary rocks is not a continuous process.
Common Structure and Texture of Sedimentary Rocks But occur in stages for example deposition of sediments ceases temporarily and then after some time, the deposition is resumed.
Common Structure and Texture of Sedimentary Rocks The short break in sedimentation is represented by the bedding plane. Bedding plane is the plane of contract between any two adjacent beds of strata.
