OF BIOSYNTHESIS AND CATABOLISM OF
ACETYLCHOLINE
Acetylcholine is the primary neurotransmitter of cholinergic system.
Biosynthesis:- The acetylcholine is bio-synthesized from amino acid – Serin involving 3enzymes
reported below:

•Choline is synthesized in liver from the amino acid serine by decarboxylation of serine to amino ethanol.
•An ethanol is trimethylated to from choline.
•an enzyme choline acetyl transferase catalyzes the biosynthesis of acetylcholine from choline and acetyl
coenzyme A.

3. Catabolism:-
The enzyme acetyl cholinesterase break down acetylcholine into choline and
acetate after its release in the synaptic cleft. Acetylcholine stored in vesicle is not
degraded by acetyl cholinesterase.
