Tools Of Dental Public Health Epidemiology : Study of distribution and determinants of health related event in population. Epidemiology Is the study of the causes, distribution and control of disease in population. The World Health Organization defines epidemiology as “the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events (including diseases), and the application of this study to the control of diseases and other health problems”. Epidemiology is the basic science of preventive and social medicine. Epidemiology is derived from the word epidemic (epi = among; demos = people; logos = study).

Biostatistics : Is branch of statistics concerned with mathematical facts and data relating to biological events Biostatistics is an important aspect of epidemiology. It supports the population research by: (1) collecting and organizing data, e.g. distribution of cases and controls, rates and proportions. (2) analyzing data, e.g. regression, survival analysis.

Social Sciences : Sciences that include sociology, cultural anthropology, and psychology Socious → companion or associated Logos → science or study. Sociology is defined as the study of human interactions and interrelations, their conditions and consequences. Sociology: deals with the human relationships and of human behaviour for a better understanding of the pattern of human life

Preventive Dentistry It encompasses all aspects of dentistry and those practices by dental professionals, individuals and communities that affect oral health. It has been conceptualized in a number of ways.

Preventive care can be defined and classified into three different levels.

Levels of Dental Preventive Care

Categories Of Oral Diseases

Practical Steps in dental public health 1.Survey A systematic collection of factual data pertaining to dental or oral health and disease in a human population within a given geographic area. 2.Analysis Means evaluation of the data that were to collected to characterize a specific health problems in the community 3.Program planning The public health professional like the clinician would like to have the ideal program plan accepted with enthusiasm. The community’s reaction to such a plan, may be to reject it or adopt it like the patient in the chair. It is the community that makes the ultimate decision.

4. Programme operation when a specific community public health programme has been adopted, a public health team with varied disciplines may be called on for programme operation. 5. Finance dental programmes , submitted to local service clubs and local foundations, have proved successful in many cases or by the government. 6.Programme Appraisal where to assess the effectiveness of the public health programme . Public health workers are accountable to the community for a periodic appraisal of their performance just as dental clinicians are accountable to their patients.

Similarities Between Personal &Community Health Care Patient Community Examination Survey Diagnosis Analysis Treatment planning Program planning Treatment Program operation Payment for services Finance Evaluation Appraisal

Differences between personal and community health worker personal community health worker Deal with one patient at a time Deals with groups of people Higher take home pay with less fringe benefits Salaried employee with fringe benefits like pension plan, sick leave, paid leave, etc. Goals are coincidentally related Goals are socially determined The patient comes to the dental practitioner The public health worker goes to the community. Ones own decision Decision made over a considerable period of time and with several groups Independent health care provider Their work is visible and publicly accountable

Conclusion Public health deals with the health of a population. Simply put, it refers to the health of every person. It aims to improve the health by preventing diseases and injuries and promoting healthy lifestyle. It is based on the philosophy of social justice and relies on the principles of prevention and health promotion to achieve its goal of ‘health for all’.
